These monopolies have destroyed the whole science...Most prof take grants and scholarships in which they write to make drugs cheaper for third world or low income countries then they patent their research.....I feel such people shouldn't be allowed to do so
It is the classic chicken and egg situation.
For big pharma, Research costs money, money needs to be recovered to fund future research, prices need to be high until economies of scale are reached or cost + marginal profit recovered at the very least (not taking into account high costs of liability insurance throughout the lifetime of the drug)...but ultimately its goal is to benefit humanity.
So what is more important, finding a cure for the gravest of diseases or inexpensive access to medication?
What should be the priority?
It’s a hard question for me to answer.
And that’s why generics is such an important part of the pharma industry.
We and India can manufacture drugs that use plant extracts and synthesis is done at small scale in uni...I can assure you it is being done as my own aunt being a prof in organic chem has done so...
Extracting distilling and synthesising on small scale is not rocket science
That’s not true.
Strong Organic chemistry research and development is the basis of generic pharma in India. Very few ToT deals or site transfers from foreign companies exist, so it’s mostly local research that’s setting this up.
Research is more at the CRO level than at university for generics.
Biotech is a whole different ball game of course.
And India has the ability to scale up from pilot plants to commercial quantities. Synthesizing on a small scale may not be a rocket science, but commercial scale up is. Not to mention doing so while maintaining cGMP standards and strict FDA codes.
Your comment is misplaced.
