Pakistan-Australia discuss closer cooperation between both navies
ISLAMABAD, Jan 27 (APP): Pakistan and Australia on Tuesday underscored the need for closer interaction and increasing cooperation between the Navies of the two countries.
A meeting held here between Federal Minister for Defence, Chaudary Ahmad Mukhtar, and the visiting Chief of Royal Australian Navy, Vice Admiral Russ Crane, expressed the desire to further increase cooperation as there existed tremendous opportunities between the two sides, which needed to be explored for the mutual benefits of the two countries.
Talking to the Australian Naval Chief, the Minister said Pakistan attached great importance to its ties with Australia as the two countries enjoyed excellent relationship, besides having a commonality of perceptions on regional and international issues.
The Minister also briefed the Australian Naval Chief about the counter-terrorism measures taken by Pakistan. He said that Pakistan has suffered a lot at the hands of terrorists as the suicide attacks and the bomb blasts have caused immense damage to human life and the countrys economy.
The Minister informed the visiting dignitary that the international community needed to gear up its efforts by enhancing the combat capacity of Pakistans security forces as well as setting up of industrial zones in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), saying theses measures would certainly help in stemming the growing tide of terrorism and extremism.
Regarding Afghanistan, the Minister said that Pakistan wanted to see peace and stability in Afghanistan because a stable and peaceful neighboring country could ensure peace in Pakistan as well.
The Minister also expressed concern over the drone attacks inside Pakistan territory.
Vice Admiral Russ Crane stressed the need for closer relationship between the Navies of Pakistan and Australia. He also thanked the Government of Pakistan for providing logistic support to ISAF forces in Afghanistan.
The Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan, Ms. Zorica McCarthy, also present in the meetings, said that her country would extend all possible assistance to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) from disturbed areas.
