Which other countries participate?
Exercise Cambrian Patrol itself began in 1959.
Exercise CAMBRIAN PATROL is delivered by Headquarters 160th (Welsh) Brigade on behalf of Commander Field Army. The Exercise has been running for over 60 years and is the British Army’s principal All Arms Patrol Exercise and is open to all three Services (Regular and Reserve) and international participants are encouraged to take part.
Exercise CAMBRIAN PATROL is a mission focused and scenario-based exercise. The Exercise is not a competition, although patrol performance is assessed throughout based on Battlecraft Syllabus (BCS) and Individual Training Requirement (ITR), in addition to robustness and leadership.
The Exercise is currently made up of eight phases, each of 48 hrs, over 10 days. Each patrol will cover approximately 60 kms (average climb and descent is over 1000m) carrying no more than 32 kgs per person. The Exercise is designed to be arduous and all participants must be prepared both mentally and physically for the challenge ahead.
All international patrols are paired with British Army units to help with preparation for Exercise Cambrian Patrol, such as teaching them how to operate the SA80 weapon system, laser sights, and thermal imagery.
At the 2022 Cambrian Patrol, a total of eight patrols won the gold award, while nearly a fifth of all teams posted a DNF (Did Not Finish).
The eight patrols achieving the elite gold award were: 1st Battalion Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment; The Infantry Battle School; 3rd Battalion The Rifles; Gurkha Company (Sittang); 2nd Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles; 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles; Gurkha Staff and Support Personnel of 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles; and 13 Air Assault Support Regiment Royal Logistic Corps.
There were also 35 silver awards, 25 bronze and 11 patrols receiving the certificate of merit.[6] A total of 27 foreign patrols signed up, including troops from the US, Poland, Australia, Albania and Lithuania.
