non of the major news channels are reporting. i would wait before celebrating because the last time khyber was reporting that Mullah is going to be in official custody in a few days.

Its not a major military operation, but some skirmishes which started yesterday after the militants launched some attacks on army positions in south & north waziristan. Major attack was launched in north wazirstan where some 600+ militants attacked an army post, had to spend all night awake hearing the thunder of artillery fire, some 80 rounds were fired, it was a terrible night, was staying just 100 feet away from the 2 guns blazing all night. Army suffered some casualties too.

Not the right time to launch the attack now.

There is no fun in what i said, artillery is fired from the base camp, which in my case is my home town. There are other base camps too with artillery support, depends on the coverage of the area to be given by the artillery.

600 hundred is a big support, but its not the first time, they have launched such attacks in the past too. The reason for such huge numbers is that the attacking force has to be in large numbers, then the attacking force can have the chance to overrun the defending forces, in this case PA is pretty strong for them, so once in a while they launch such huge attack to increase their chances to inflict damage to the army or over run a position.

600 is indeed HUGE. I can't recall a battle yet in Afghanistan that's entailed those numbers.

100 ft.? Artillery? I find it difficult to understand how your accomodations could be within grenade throwing distance of their gun pits or ammunition.

Even a small-arms/M.G. position would difficult to understand. Aside from the security of your own P.A. forces by embedding heavy, crew-served weapons within easy reach of nefarious elements of your general population, I'd think the public would view these weapon locations with some trepidation as they'd naturally draw the attention and fire of any taliban assault.

Could you elaborate a bit? As you aren't the only civilian in your locale and many must be aware, I'd not think that there would be any operational security violation by describing your community and it's physical relationship with this very adjacent military kaserne.

Sir, am not very sure of attacks in Afghanistan but did hear few times when hundreds of taliban were involved in attacking either coalition forces of afghan forces or far flung cities out of local afghan forces or coalition forces reach. One such link below, which mentions hundreds of afghan taliban gathering to attack coalition forces. Plus, afghan talib knows he can't win by a frontal assault attack on coalition forces no matter how many they are, so they use rarely such attacks.

As for Pakistan, this is not the first time, in the SWA battles many times they used to attack besieged troops or a fort with hundreds in numbers, as we don't have air power or night fighting capability as effective as Nato or ISAF. Recently few month back too, around 700+ figure taliban after crossing afghan border attacked a FC camp in Mohmand Agency, which let to many of their deaths.

And as for me, i had gone to my home town for an annual festival which is the base camp for all operations in North Waziristan Agency, the artillery guns are em placed within the Cantt area, which is totally sealed to civilians.

Check out the below coordinates in Google earth, its the Cantt area of my home town & you can clearly see the gun emplacements in a what used to be a football ground. I had stayed at an army mess which is very nearby to this ground and could clearly hear the gun crews shouting & even the FIRE command in the night. This military area is fully secured as its sealed by the army & has just 2 entry & exit points with the inner highly sensitive area more heavily secured. After the shelling started had to shift my room to a little bit farther accommodation about 0.5KM away due to the huge noise as i had my little baby with me, but it made very little difference.

Plus no security issue as whole of the town hears the booms when these guns start blazing, even many times talibans have fired rockets at this garrison, its no secret place. This is one of the major base camps & even was during the british rule for expeditions into Afghanistan & is around 35-40KM away from Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan Agency, just like what Wanna Town is for South Waziristan Agency.

Anyhow i hope i clarified the position in detail.
