Pakistan appeals to US public for aid

WASHINGTON: Pakistan on Friday appealed to the US public to make small donations through their cell phones to help care for some 1.7 million people displaced in the military operation launched against the Taliban. Ambassador Hussain Haqqani called on the US public to donate five dollars each by sending text messages and voiced hope that television networks would encourage the effort. US cellular users can make five-dollar donations by texting “Swat” to the number 20222. afp.

Would this not be a good idea to do in pakistan-EU countries also.

Us Americans are pretty generous when it comes to making donations for a good cause. I see nothing wrong in donating to help those poor people who were displaced.....:usflag::pakistan::tup:

Aren't you embarrassed that your government doesn't provide health care and other basic necessities to hundreds of millions of deprived Indians? Did you know that a staggering 665 million Indians still don't have access to a toilet? Indians lead in defecating in the open. You're the world champion. Now, that's something I would be embarrassed about.

I am sure you do. 40% of Pakistani population also do open defecation. But there is a difference. Our PM do not ask for 'change' from other country's PUBLIC.

Disagree. Perhaps it could have been framed in a more discreet fashion*, but going to the US public is hardly begging.

BaburCM, a poster I disagree with almost completely in almost everything he has posted, is correct in his own fashion this time. There is no point Indians putting down Pakistanis and vice versa on social and economic issues.

How does the saying go? Is hamam mein ham sab nange hain.

For the Pakistanis who think this is an embarrassment, I'll say the same thing I do when I debate Indians. We should be embarrassed by our poverty, our readiness to suppress women, the way we treat our environment, our endemic corruption, castes, sects, religious fundamentalism. We should be embarrassed by our willingness to let ethnic passions drive us. We should be embarrassed by our willingness to let politicians rape our nations. We should be embarrassed by the ***** on the streets, the way we treat the poor, the way we cheat and lie our way through the system, the way we always try to get work done 'on the easy'.

There are plenty of things to get embarrassed about, to feel that our 'izzat' has been outraged than this which is simply a call to help.

* If I were GOP, I'd organize a bunch of prominent NGOs to drive the effort, rope in a few western politicians (say Carter) to be the public face of the campaign, hire a PR firm to round it off. And I'd stay in the background.

Jolie, Pitt donate $1mn for Pakistan IDPs
Thursday, 18 Jun, 2009 | 12:09 PM PST | The donation was made through their Jolie-Pitt Foundation to the UN Refugee Agency. — AP Pakistan
Health care in Pakistan crumbles under refugee burden WASHINGTON: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, the Hollywood pair known for their charitable work have donated $1 million to help displaced Pakistanis from Swat and the northwestern areas of the country.

The donation was made through their Jolie-Pitt Foundation to the UN Refugee Agency.

Jolie worked with the agency for eight years and has visited Pakistan three times in the past. The head of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees thanked the foundation and termed the situation in Pakistan ‘the most challenging humanitarian crisis of the past decade’ with more than 2.5 million displaced and hundreds of thousands now living in camps.

Jolie is set to celebrate World Refugee Day in Washington on Thursday with US secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The US has become the largest contributor to humanitarian relief effort in Pakistan so far, having given $165 million. Obama has requested Congress to approve another $225 million.

The UN appealed for $500 to 600 million about two weeks ago but now estimates that it will require more aid to carry out its humanitarian efforts. — APP/DawnNews

We shall be thankfull to all donars

As long as the aid is really going to those who need it, there should not be any issues with this. It does not matter if it is equivalent to begging, what matters is that some poor displaced people out there will get some relief.

donating for a cause and a war that affects the whole world is not begging
