Pakistan and Russia -- just add captions look at the innocence new start

That photo has got language barrier written all over it. Pakistan should watch out though, Russia hasn't forgotten its Afghan debacle.

It might be diplomatic pictures but it's sending a clear message.

russia stands to gain, pakistan and afghanistan stand to gain from an afghan-pak-russian/SCO nexus.

Russia is going to use Pakistan to sort out its Caucasus problem and then dump Pakistan. All Pakistan is going to get is more pissed off Jihadists from central Asia spontaneously combusting in Pakistani cities. So as I said Pakistan should watch out.

there's a lot more to it than the caucasus dispute.

Not for Russia, there is not. What else does Russia gain from cosying up with Pakistan?

geostrategy which is a lot of things.

for example russia wants a stable afghanistan (india does not to keep the western border of pakistan busy). Russia probably doesn't want to deal with what will probably be a Pashtun dominated Afghan government but knows that Pakistan will have a lot of mediators with the Pashtuns in Afghanistan. its diplomacy.

there's a lot more though.

He is shaking hands with Zardari, he is checking his wallet is still there.

will Zardari also tie a bomb to this guy's leg and activate the timer?

rumour has it that he has a knack for making offers one can never refuse!

You guys really think that America is just going to let other players come into Afghanistan and eat the Kebab that it has been cooking for the past ten years? America is not going anywhere from Afghanistan. It might withdraw its ground troops sooner or later, but its not going to let other players come in and run the show in Afghanistan. American and NATO troops will be back the day things go out of control. They have a lot to gain both strategically and economically in Afghanistan.

Besides, Russia doesn't care much about Afghanistan anymore. The strategic interests of Russia are quite different from that of USSR. Not to forget they ll always have their trusty Northern Alliance in Afghanistan, and those people aren't going anywhere.

I think Zardari said ... here we are buddy

Russian guy : You live in my heart Zardari , I will sacrifice my life for you and your country

That is a true friendship in making - this friendship will be like Great friendship of old centuries

The trust , the bond the mutal respect I mean this picture is just so PURE , and innocent , and so real

Its like so much being said in simple hand shake , and the facial expressions and the grip of hand ...

Its almost like Zardari is saying - you know you were right ... about many things Russian, US back stabbed us in end just like you warned me about it but I did not listen in time

Roadrunner:
It is a good observation on your part about the new development of economic co-operation between the two countries. It will lead to more self reliant Pakistan as the trade creates jobs and tax revenue for the country.
I think leadership in Pakistan is determined to move forward with the economic development agenda as advised by Westren countries and China as well. The region it self will benefit through this shift in Pakistans long term vision.
There is a genuine desire on part of countries of this region to help Pakistan to get rid of its past and join the world community in peaceful co-existence. I hope to see a peaceful and prosperous Pakistan in my life time.
As for Russia is concerned they have everything to gain from the geopolitical angle. I am referring to the spread of terrorists in the caucasus region weighs heavily on the minds of Russian Government.
My best wishes are with people of Pakistan and Russia in their efforts to develop mutually beneficial relationship.

Probably yes,but why you are dismissing American's from the show, troops withdrawal does not means control withdrawal,US will continue to control Afghanistan,Afghan had reportedly $ 1 trillion of resources,US fairly knows that the day it leave there China and Russia will jump to Afghan to exploit the resources.

And just like you say India does not want a turbulent afghan,if it was so India would not have invested so much there,we consider Afghan an effective route that would take us inside central Asia.

India didn't side with anyone, India was part of Non Aligned Movement. Besides there is a difference between siding with someone and getting directly involved in physical battle.

and so was pakistan :agree:

Afghanistan always looks weak to outsiders and turns into a nightmare. After a time foreigners usually leave and diplomacy is the next best thing.

The Russians are probably competing with the Americans. Both have invaded Afghanistan but the Russians have a greater need for seeing a stable Afghanistan. I think this will see Afghanistan falling into the sphere of Russia/SCO with Pakistan as mediator.

Besides, Russia doesn't care much about Afghanistan anymore. The strategic interests of Russia are quite different from that of USSR. Not to forget they ll always have their trusty Northern Alliance in Afghanistan, and those people aren't going anywhere.

The Russians have had a centuries old interest in Afghanistan. It's stronger now than it was before. Things have changed. The main one being Russia is not Imperial or expansionist anymore.

The Northern Alliance won't be Russia's allies. They've realized the Northern Alliance are a bit like the South Vietnamese and the Pashtuns like the North. Once foreign troops leave the North overpowers the South. It is better to be friends with the dominant group and diplomacy will solve most problems (but not all).

Russia won't invade Afghanistan. I think it's obvious. China won't invade Afghanistan either. I don't think any country will.

Afghanistan has a lot of minerals and resources but I don't think it's a price people would be willing to pay.

And just like you say India does not want a turbulent afghan,if it was so India would not have invested so much there,we consider Afghan an effective route that would take us inside central Asia.

If that's the route you're going to take you'll need to go through Pakistan. I don't think India will want that.

I think India will want to use the Iranian ports to access central asia and avoid Afghanistan completely.

It has invested some money into Afghanistan but it is probably in return for favours from the current Afghan regime.
