Indus originates from China and passes through IOK(10%) while 85% of its downstream flow through Pakistan so as per International law, Indus belongs to Pakistan just like Nile belongs to Egypt and Sudan while its origins is in Kenya. International law clearly says that main stakeholder of the river is always the country where the river is ending yet Pakistan allowed Ravi and Sutlej to be used by India as per IWT. So the idiot Indians who believe that they can control the flow of Indus are living in a fool paradise.

Those who feel the treaty will be scrapped need to consider what India will do with so much water ( Indus & Jhelum) once existing storage sources are full. India has to either divert or store this water . The issue is where ? Can we cut through the mountains & divert this water to the plains ?

Or, can we divert this water into the Chenab and divert it inland from the plains of Akhnoor / Jammu before it flows into Marala HW in Pakistan.

A little known fact is that we not only gave them water , we also paid them to construct ( refer Article V - Financial Provisions) canals which were used against us.

We paid the 62060,000 pounds sterling in ten equal installments to construct water channels in W Pakistan. This was paid on the 1st of Nov each year - Even possibly during the years when we fought wars !!!

Thats not all, Pakistan used this money to create defense oriented canals whose western banks were higher than the Eastern ones ! In effect , we paid them to create defenses against us !!

This transfer was necessary to make up for the water Pakistan was giving up by ceding its rights to the eastern rivers. The World Bank initially planned for India to pay for these works, but India refused. The Bank responded with a plan for external financing supplied mainly by the United States and the United Kingdom."

Lets not indulge in vicious circle .For your knowledge along side with IWT ,an Indus basin development was established by the World Bank for contribution either in grants or loan to accommodate the making of canals and other systems in Pakistan.Countries contributed were :Australia ,Canada, Germany, Newzeland , UK and USA (mainly by UK and USA). No where India, so your question is not valid.

Withdrawing from Indus treaty doesn't mean India will stop water. It is just that India is expressing it displeasure with Pakistan and saying treaties are based on mutual trust rather on some signed papers.

Anyway, the chance of this happening is quite low. Indians will be the first to oppose our government if India stops water that effects the common Pakistani. India's enmity is with Pakistan's establishment and not with Pakistanis

Let's not imagine the boogeymen that don't exist for now. This spectre of a fictitious retaliation is what caught us a couple of time with pants down for no reason.

However, careful political planning must be done for any contingencies that may arise from such a step. Which include of course, the involvement of other countries in the eastern hemisphere.

Economic steps is one way I see how this can be dealt without firing a single shot.
