Pakistan and Czech Republic sign collaboration MoU
Jon Grevatt Jane's Asia-Pacific Industry Reporter
Pakistan and the Czech Republic have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to increase defence co-operation between the two countries, said Islamabad on 24 March.
A statement issued by the Pakistan government said that the agreement covers collaboration in defence production, military training and exchanges of personnel.
Although no details of the agreement were revealed, the statement said that "both countries had great potential in the field of defence production, which needed to be explored for the mutual benefits of the two sides".
The MoU was signed by Pakistan's Minister for Defence Production Abdul Qayyum Khan Jatoi and visiting Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister of the Czech Republic Martin Bartak.
Pakistan's agreement with the Czech Republic is indicative of a trend that has seen Islamabad sign similar accords with numerous other countries, including China, France, Germany, Indonesia, Jordan, Malaysia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
This attempt to diversify defence partnerships is regarded as an important strategy in Pakistan because it remains wary of its relationship with the country from which it procures the majority of its military equipment, the United States, which previously imposed sanctions on Pakistan throughout the 1960s and again in the 1990s.
In a related development on the same day, Pakistan's Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi told US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that Islamabad intended to accelerate requests to procure military equipment.
Responding to a question in Washington, DC, Qureshi said: "We've agreed to fast-track our requests that have been pending for months and years on the transfer of military equipment to Pakistan." He said the move will increase security along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
