Pakistan among countries participating in US Air Force Rodeo competition

There are some great pictures in the gallery - the U.S. general with the cowboy hat - rodeos are traditionally a cowboy/livestock show and contest:

The beards - I understand they are religious in nature, and I firmly believe in the right of an individual to express himself this way with beard or hair, but it still amazes me a bit because there is no way an oxygen or chemical warfare mask is going to seal. If those guys are at 30,000' and the C-130 loses pressure, what are they going to do?

The military is one of few organizations that can (and should) have rules that override certain religious edicts. If one of those guys is a loadmaster, passes out, he will endanger the whole aircraft, because he cannot do his duty.

totally agree with you on that,
religious symbols and facial hair etc shouldn’t hinder the performance and effectiveness of a soldier. He is not only undermining his own position but also risking the lives of his comrades who have trusted him with performing his duties.

Beard is more of a cultural accessory of a male in our part of the world rather than being religious.
We have a saying here
The Beard is.. In Islam but Islam is not in the beard

Meaning, yes Islam recognises the beard as an identity of honour and position for a male but…. Beard doesn’t dictate Islam and Islam is not hindered by the fact that a believer sports a beard or not. I once went to see a training exercises involving jungle warfare and special tactics and saw one of the participants who was heavily beared, I mean really thick and long beard he was in his late 20s to early 30s and I saw him gearing up and putting the face mask which was a lot of struggle and it looked very uncomfortable and I did ask him how he is finding having to put the mask on with such a big beard? To which he said he is managing but I could tell that the beard was coming in the way.

Hi,

There is no reason for a soldier to have a beard----it gives the enemy something to grab onto at time of close combat and disable you----. Army is not a religious seminary----a warrior is a warrior is a warrior----he needs to have short hair on his skull so the enemy cannot grab them---he needs a clean face to look fresh and strong in appearance----.

Pak Millitary needs to start with a buzz cut for its soldiers and officers----you must not be able to grab the hair in your hands ----ie--between the finger tips and the heal of your palm----.

That beard is a pure excuse for a soldier to hide behind religion and for an army to be forceably put into submission.

I think you should come up with a valid reason about why a warrior needs a beard instead of putting in a childish statement. IMO, MastanKhan points are absolutely valid.

Do you think in current scenario with the advent of long range weapons and guided technology, there is a probability that the foes will come so close to eachother that they have a chance to grab other person from beard ? even if one comes close to his foe why should he be bothered to grab him from his beard instead of killing him on first place with his gun or knife? And above it will not be one on one fight rather they will be operating in groups or battalions as its the way army operates , so why should a foe risk his life by trying to grab other's beard when he knows his partners are with him and in meantime can kill him

lol why don't you say directly that you are more against having beard than anythng else , and that is the only reason you are supporting his claim. You guys have phobias

err.. So you don't think their is any possibility of hand to hand combat? Anyways, it's your army.. you know better. I just felt that his points were valid.

Chogy Most of the pilots in Air Force (Fighter Pilots) are clean shaven and those who opt to keep beards cannot grow it beyond certain limit but 99% Fighter Pilots are clean shaven. These are probably security guys as the guy with long beard is not wearing air force uniform.

I don't think it matters today.Sikhs have long beards and turban yet they fight bravely. Now Air force is a totally different issue thats why PAF Fighter Pilots are clean shaven.

Look at his insigna on the sleeve Chogy, a dagger with lightning bolts surrounding it, clerly stating that he is SSW. I once asked the same question to my father who is ex- army aviation for pakistan. He once had a man in his unit who had a long long and wide beard. When he drove his motorcycle , half his beard moved to one side, and the other half to the other, looked quite comical. I asked my father whether he is a part of the crew. He said, long beards are not allowed , although not strictly, but generally not allowed for aircrews.
