Aoa, please explain to me, how does paf or any airforce benefit from gunship helicopters? I know i don't understand this stuff. I had an impression that, helicopters are for army and navy. Because they provide a limited air-arm for a quick-response. Helicopters are used for both troop/cargo transportation and attack/CAS purposes. While the airforce has jets for both CAP and CAS, why do they need gunship helicopters? Airbase defence?

Also another related question:
Both our army and paf has C-130s. For what reasons does the paf need them, and for what purposes does the army? Why aren't they with only one service? If all services become independent of each other, doesn't that reduce their relevance to each other?

short answer is Contingencies...thats the key word no need to read any more if you understand what that means

re relevance of gunships to air forces.
same reason PAF and PN will have their own anti aircraft batteries, their own special forces, their own medical unit.. and so forth
the gunships provide a dedicated anti armor and infantry role which is also an element within the over all scope and objectives of the air force , defend the airspace and defend the other arms of the military and destroy the enemy formations..their mission can be specific to defending airforce assets relieving the army from that added responsibility.

also in case of evacuation of downed pilots and dropping their own special forces , a gunship can provide fire support and suppression and is far better than a faster jet to loiter the area. note that some airforces even have their own surface to surface missile assets as well. the reason to have different assets is to have a flexibility in achieving the objectives. in the end its down to the structure of different arms of the military and how the funds are spent.
note that artillery also has its own radar systems. while the integration and sharing of resources is always a preferred choice but dedicated units gives you flexibility and choice and saves crucial time.


mutual relevance/ reliance of forces

almost a similar question, the reason for having same assets is to save time and be flexible. airforce doesnt just exist at the airbases. it is present on the strategic mountain tops and hills and important junctions in the form of forward observers and radar operators that would have radars and other mobile sensor arrays and their won SAM systems. having dedicated assets saves each force time from having to send the request from different channels and getting that approved and provided. so vital equipment can be para dropped or delivered from airports to airports or remote locations, C-130s can come handy. if there is anything bigger then each force can go to the other one. the army has its own air defence corps but it has its limits and its own aviation branch which has its limits and it will call in PAF when needed. likewise PAF will request the help of army where its already present and can provide wider and better support.

military arms work as a team they dont learn to work independently on purpose but they always plan for contingencies any unexpected situation or outcome. having such similar assets dont make them irrelevant to each other but on the contrary they compliment each other up to the point when one needs to call the specialist for the job.

its not the army's job to fly transport aircraft like the C130. yes, helos and attack helos fall into their AOR.

even though the army prepares for major para drops using C130's but of late the SOF's have taken more and more responsibility of being inserted by helos. para drops anyway are executed in the time of a major escalation. for FATA, the helos are preferred such ops.
