Pak govt. waives half of storage charges on NATO containers stranded in country's ports

In a sign that Pak-US relations are on the mend, the Pakistan government has waived half of the demurrage charges on NATO containers stranded on the country's sea ports due to blockage of the land route.

The decision of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) to write off Rs 187.8 million demurrage and storage charges was taken just four days before the first anniversary of the attack on the Salala check post by US troops, reports The Express Tribune.

According to officials, three shipping and freight forwarding companies- International Logistics and Trading, Security Packers and Customs Consultants and Advisers - responsible for handling the NATO cargo, owe a total sum of Rs 375.5 million.

An official said that NATO hired these companies for handling the cargo, including the containers that remained stranded from the end of November 2011 to July 2012.

The move has irked some in the finance ministry, an official said, noting that the ministry had opposed the proposal to write off the demurrage charges.

The Economic Affairs Division argues that these companies should take up the claims with the NATO authorities instead of seeking a waiver.

The ECC did not deliberate over the issue and the decisions on three separate summaries of the ministry of ports and shipping were taken in haste. Both the divisions had given their dissenting views on the summary before it was tabled in the ECC meeting, the official added.

NATO supplies were halted due to tensions between Washington and Islamabad in the aftermath of the airstrike on Salala check post that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers including two officers on November 26, 2011.

In response, Pakistan blocked NATO supplies to US troops in Afghanistan. But after months of negotiations to reopen NATO supply the government tagged deliveries to Afghanistan at 5,500 dollars per container.

So - We have to provide oil by ourselves to get screwed

Incorrect. Pakistan demanded $5,500 per container but in the end agreed to reopen the routes at the previous rates.

Wasn't a price in between agreed between both sides?

Anyways, what a disgrace, why was this amount wavered off?

Welcome to made in USA.

Does this reflects the professionalism of USA? Pakistan.. perhaps.

No Sir. The rate remained at $250 per container, before and after.

If this was the case than Sir, it was cheating from the first day.

USA should have estimated the cost price of transfer of one container and fixed the fair price. which is clearly not the case here.

What it reflects.. is corruption, bribery, cheating.....

In this case, we can very well assume that cheating may not have been limited to the the cost price.
It may very well have been included... counting the containers, illegal stuff in containers, containers not even reaching Afghanaistan, containers may have different weight as compare to deceleration on papers..................

Well said!;)

Actually, very well said!

no actually americans will fart off the money in the name of aids

What it reflects.. is ....................

..... is a transaction accepted by both parties.

USA offered a rate and Pakistan accepted. Pakistan tried to raise rates during the blockade of the supply routes and was unsuccessful in its bid. The rate remained the same after the reopening, reflecting that the previously agreed upon rate was to remain in force. The rest is all conjecture on your part.

Transaction? or arm twisting? Pakistan's accountants have calculated $15'000. / container.

But, If you want to talk about contract's than lets discuss bilateral.... how about the transactions of open bills of Pakistan army, USA is contractually obligated to pay all the expenses, Pakistan army incur in support to USA's peace campaign in Afghanistan.

What is happening to those bills... is very well known to every one.

BTW.... Go to Egypt and ask them to charge $250 for the simply sailing through the sea water.

Note: Every, transaction.... accepted by Asif Ali Zardari is piece of crap, invalid, and corruption written all over it.

While, I'm more angry at the hypocrite Imran Khan, who talk a lot to tax Pakistanis but never talk about, adjusting fair price to the transit and making it transparent and auditable.

What kind of drug are you smoking?
So by not talking about something you are all of a sudden a hypocrite?
Well I have never heard you talk about how stealing a car is bad, by your own logic you are a hypocrite.

And just to show how stupid you are, Imran Khan has talked about it. he has said that he will take Pakistan out of the War on Terror, meaning no more transit for these containers and thus no need to negotiate a price.
