Suzuki to Phase Out Mehran, Will Introduce New 1,000cc Celerio Next Year


Pak Suzuki is planning to phase out Suzuki Mehran from 2018 to replace it with locally manufactured 660cc Suzuki Alto. This is happening despite the fact that local vendors are going to oppose the move due to massive sales of Suzuki Mehran parts and accessories.


Suzuki Mehran is one of the most successful cars in Pakistan and more than 70 percent of its content are produced locally.

In another news, Suzuki is also hoping to introduce 1,000cc Celerio in March 2017 to phase out Suzuki Cultus.

It maybe recalled that Suzuki Cultus was introduced in year 2,000 to replace Suzuki Khyber. Similarly Mehran was introduced in 1988 when Suzuki had discontinued Suzuki FX 800cc.

Pak Suzuki said that its new 660cc alto will be fully produced with-in Pakistan to ultimately replace the iconic Suzuki Mehran 800cc.

The was discussed during a Senate’s Standing Committee on Industries and Production that visited Pak Suzuki Motor Company Limited (PSMCL) plant yesterday.

Senate’s Standing Committee delegation was led by Senator Hidayatullah and included Khalida Parveen, Kalsoom Perveen and Chaudhry Tanvir Khan.


Additional Secretary, Ministry of Industries and Production, Sher Ayub Khan and Engineering Development Board CEO, Tariq Ejaz Chaudhry were also part of the delegation.

Senators were told that Suzuki has already started the arrangements for local manufacturing of 660cc Alto car.

Suzuki also revealed that it is aiming to introduce imported Suzuki Grand Vitara SUV and 1,300cc Sedan Ciaz in 2017.

Hyundai, Nissan with Datson, VW etc are willing to make vehicles in Pakistan but our corrupt system and auto mafia is killing it.
I bet the Nissan Qashqai could become a major hit in Pakistan if locally produced. for smaller cars the VW Golf or Polo could be the higher end versions to compete with alto (if it happens I bet alto will go away).

The Mehran is face of all that is wrong with so called Pakistani industry. Enjoying protection, after 28 years production of what is a simple model, not too differant from what was being made 60 years ago in second rate European countries like Poland. Yet even now they have achieved only 70% indigenous production.

Like I have said before these so called industries are nothing but rackets. In fact I would categorize these industries, in particular the large concerns in Karachi as "legal bhattas" . Holding an entire country of 190 million as hostage, cartels enjoying legal monopoly to fleece the customer with shoddy product - the customer of course having no choice to go anywhere else.

The cartels are unholy alliances involving :-

(i) foreign companies who get to earn profits from the products that they stopped making three decades ago in rest of the world. In this instance Suzuki.

(ii) Local employees - who use the employment as 'welfare benefits'. No real competition. Shoddy work practices. Lazy work routine reflecting low productivity. The unions and managers connected up with local political parties (in Karachi this being MQM mafia) make sure jobs are protected and given to their favourites. Jobs are sold. In return for payment and or connections a regular income is assured. This means most jobs will go to within the MQM fraternity. Indeed chances are a illegal migrant from India will stand more chance to get a job in these cartels then somebody from the north. This is most unfair as the cartels milk the entire country but then make sure the benefits accrue only to their local community. This applies to all cartels including PIA.

(iii) These cartels have bought out political power and any attempt at change is difficult as they use street power and their connections to frustrate change. We saw this in PIA, K-Electric and same applies to the auto industry.

How bad the Pakistani customer is being fleeced? How much of his hard earned money is keeping these lazy workers who are nothing but parasites fed? Some of that money doubt going to India as remittances.

For £5,490 in UK you can buy Romanian made Dacia Sandero

This Dacia is made in Romania. Transported across whole of Europe. Sold in one of the richest markets in the world. Subjected to very strict legal safety requirements and yet it is on sale for almost the same as Mehrani is sold in Karachi, the city where it is made in. Is there something wrong here? Does that tell you what pelf is going on under the 'guise' of industry?

That is why it is time CPEC opened up Pakistan to Chinese industry. This would create sufficient political pressure (from China) that would force the Pak establishment to start dismanting these 'bhattas'. Nobody defends the criminal bhatta groups on the grounds that it gives employment to people. Well there is not much differance here, although I would say the legal bhattas are worse because they prevent genuine competive industry from emerging.

Any Indian members here who could shed light on what £5,000 buys on the car market in India?

F#king garbage is being dumped in Pakistan, these shoddy Suzuki offer the consumer a substandard product that will never be sold anywhere else in the world and yet it is welcomed with open arms in Pakistan. Shame

Successive governments and establishment are responsible for allowing the crappiest car to be sold with extortionate prices, Shame on the Pakistani government for allowing car makers to rip off the Pakistani public with substandard features.

No it's not. It's murder. In Pakistan a very twisted form of morality has taken root mostly under the eyes of the screaming, ranting, threatening Mullah. Suzuki Mehran is a product of engineering dating to mid 1980 or over 30 years ago. Think of the technological advances sine then. No lap tops, no internet, no mobile phones etc.

In that time there has been sea change in understanding of auto safety. All that is missing from the Mehran which means it is one of the most dangerous cars on the road. Think of all those children and families that could have been saved if a more modern, safer car was on the road for the same money? The thought of that is deeply repugnent, yet the Pakistani public is entirely like sheep being maimed, killed on the roads and not a sound. However should anybody utter one thing wrong with referance to religion and that person will be lynched. That is twisted morality - twisted by design, by the ruling elite.

In India they stopped making the equivalent in 2013. Can anybody guess what price it was on sale? Yes, £2,100 making it less than half price compared to over £5,000 in Pakistan.

This is the industry/rackets they want to protect in Pakistan from the 'predatory' Chinese industry and CPEC.
