Pak Suzuki to replace Mehran with 660cc Alto

In India the the Maruti Suzuki Alto is on sale for £3,300 which is significantly cheaper than the £5,000 Mehran in Pakistan. The Maruti appears to be a updated Mehran.

@DESERT FIGHTER It's going to take time to overcome the car mafia based in Karachi who have huge influences in high places as well as street power.

Street power? No way.. people are forced to buy those ugly tin cans because they dont have much choices...

Mehran is the cheapest car in the market with a shyt load of spares...

A guy with a budget of 1 million cant afford anything but a mehran.. so he has no say but to buy it..

Other than that his choices are limited to old suzuki imports from japan... even those sell at high prices... imagine a used 600cc import selling for 1+ million? Or a used imported toyota Vitz/Yaris for 1.6?

In India people are very conscious of average fuel consumption i.e. running cost of the car. And Suzuki beats the rest in this category also. The model posted by me returns 22 KM per liter of Diesel

No suzuki or toyota in Pak has that kind of mileage..

My daily drive is a Toyota Altis

New-Toyota-Corolla-2017-facelift-1.jpg

And i think at max it gives me 16-17 or 18 on long routes.. if im lucky..

The other is a Toyota VIGO... it gives me 5-7 km/ltr.

This is Suzuki's S cross 1.6 alpha which I usually drive on highway. It returns me an average of over 20 Km. and it is smoother than my Toyota Etios. But Toyota Corolla Altis is definitely classy any day

The new model certainly doesn't make an impression as far as the outlook is concerned; equally ugly as her predecessor.

But come to think of it, downsizing doesn't seem like an entirely retrogressive move as it is being portrayed by some. 660 will gulp comparatively lesser fuel per liter so her Brake Specific Fuel Consumption is going to be better, even though it comes at a cost of slightly curtailed maximum thrust (which is not going to matter as much since designs in 600-1000cc bracket are primarily geared towards maximizing fuel efficiency in low speed urban environments, not on producing monstrous engine power).

The most important question remains whether this 'improved model' will incorporate essentials such as ABS, Auto-Transmission, CVT, Power Windows, and enhanced passenger comfort. Unless these features are introduced the market is likely to be dominated by refurbished Japanese stuff.

Govt of India is bringing in a massive overhaul of passenger vehicle regulations in 2017 - next year.

From 2017 end, air bags will be mandatory on every single vehicle sold in India along with audio seat belt warnings that cannot be silenced unless seat belt is plugged in.

Currently, the airbags are not mandatory and optional and seat belt warnings are only visual and not audio (much more irritating)
That act alone carries more moral currency than all the religious fart that comes out of every mullah, every mullah inspired law ever made in Pakistan. it will save countless lives, it will save countless from being maimed.

Today is my 'bad mullah day' so expect lot of bile in that direction.

Well, a ridiculous number of Indians
Life is funny old thing, I tell yeh. More people will die a agonizing, rupturing, painful death on the roads of India and Pakistan this month then in all the wars Pak/India have fought in last 7 decades - the main differance being on the roads toddlers, mums, children and whole families are wiped out.

Yet not a protest. 1o soldiers die and countries are ready to nuke each other. Billions are then invested in more arms. Yet not a sound about the daily carnage on the roads which only require few simple rules and regulations to fix. I often notice the major differance between South Asian media and media in UK. Papers here are filled with the mundane. Road cleaning, salt gritting, WC facilities at local shopping mall, disabled access to local hospital, housing renovation grants, nursey education, local crime rates, jobs market, local hospital waiting times.

Whereas in Pakistani papers all these mundane problems of life have apparently been sorted out. They are more concerned about profound issues. USA policy in Middle East. Reason for Pakistan's existance. Islam and modern science. How a Muslim women in Wyoming, USA was abused for wearing hijab etc.

It all highlights focus and priorities.

Well, a ridiculous number of Indians were dying on account of road accidents. Something had to be done.

Its an interesting story of GoI vs Auto makers

When first proposed the auto industry said let us do it voluntarily.
They did not. They did introduce airbags but only on the top variant of all cars over a certain cost.

GoI finally floated the idea to pull the plug and make it mandatory starting next year seeing the non-cooperation of the car manufacturer's.

Auto makers then demanded that cars over a certain cost must have this mandatorily instead of all cars as it pushes up cost for the poor common man (what an excuse!).

GoI then decided that every car even if it is a tin can on 4 wheels must have airbags. This way when everyone is forced to make it, the cost of airbags will come down drastically as there are millions of cars manufactured in India each year. So volumes can be used to reduce per unit cost for everyone.

The seat belt audio warnings are the most irritating. Some Indians will ofcourse do jugaad and fit in a metal rod in the seat belt catch. But Government is betting that it will be enough to force majority of the drivers to use seat belts properly.

The Euro 6 thing came as bolt out of the blue when the pollution index was released. Our air is toxic, this seemed to be the only way. Only thing is, it will cost GoI over $10 billion to technologically upgrade all the oil refineries in India to be able to jump Euro 5 level and directly produce Euro 6 compliant petrol and diesel.

Still..massive changes afoot in Indian automotive sector in the next couple of years.

These big companies will only see their self interest. Govt has to intervene because its government which has to think for the interest of the people.

India is a huge market and if government does not intervene, India will become a mint and a dumping ground for cheap stuff.

In Pakistan, market is much smaller. And look how Suzuki which across the border makes world class cars, cuts corners and dumps cheap stuff in the country. Problem is two fold here. The govt does not liberalize the market which discourages competition at one end. But then when government tries to enforce regulation these automobile companies dont comply or at worst blackmail because they know government can go to a certain limit.

The reason I hate to live in Pakistan is because I can only afford a Corolla for the price of Audi in Saudi. If i cud afford an Audi in Pakistan i cud easily buy a Bentley in Saudi. I dont know why Pakistanis dont protest over this nonsense?

@Kaptaan

Symptons are these, my brother. Mere symptons...

All other ills in your old country are the product of something deeper. The elite and their subserviant political class is also a symptom really.

So what is the root cause? What is the deep sickness that produces such symptoms in Pak?

The so called system is also a symptom.

What is the root cause of corruption and apathy in Pakistan, my Pak brohters?

It would be vulgar for me to form an opinion when I am not bound to Pak.

However, I find it deepest tragedy to see a great Civilisation State and her beautiful people suffering these symptons on daily basis.

I hope you, Pak brothers, will enlighten me about the rootcause of your suffering.

At the most reductive IMHO the cause is lack of clear understanding of what Pakistan is. At conceptual level there is major flaw. Like in any idea if there is conceptual flaw it will lead to much waste of energy and or lack of direction. You can fix apply balm on the symptoms but the underlying problem will keep cropping up.

To highlight my point I would ask what do you think Pakistani's fear most?

Blessed is the youth which is enriched in wisdom!

I can not give you a positive rating...if I could I would have given you a 100.

All your posts and analyses are condensed in that one word. WHAT.

Do forgive my directness...but I have never seen such apathy, such pathetic indifference to Being or state of being what I see in your great country.

Such a shame for a country which is the fountainhead of Civilisation to fall so low.

So, yes, your old country has no Sense of Being or Self... just drifting, deadwood in shallow waters.

And yet, yet...

When the student is ready, teacher comes

When the peoples are ready, father comes

When the state is ready, the wise ruler comes.

Hope is the only agency which can and does advance human condition. I have hope for your old country.

In Canada when we say Economical we mean good gas consumption and for that Suzuki is the worst, totaly failed brand in North America.

I agree, I haven't seen a single Suzuki from Windsor to all the way Quebec

This is all Modi's doing :enjoy:
Hopefully Sher-E-Pakistan aka Nawaz Sharif will also bring in similar policies :pakistan:

The answer to my question is "Pakistan".

In the real world there only exists Muslim, Desi, Asian, Indian etc. Nouns or adjectives aplenty but all avoiding the big 'P'. This exposes something real deep. A structural problem that is root cause of the national malaise.
