Pak says it does not want another war with India

Islamabad, May 09: Pakistan does not want another war with India over Kashmir, Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar has said while describing the current status of bilateral relations as the "best" the two countries ever had.

"We are having a very nice relationship with India, the best of the relationship we have ever had. The confidence-building measures are working very well and I think the defence of Pakistan today is much safer than five years (ago)," Mukhtar, senior leader of the Pakistan People's Party that heads the ruling coalition and one of Pakistan's leading industrialists, said.

Ruling out the possibility of a war on the Kashmir issue, the Pakistani minister said the two countries had shown flexibility in their traditional stand on the issue.

"I am sure that both the countries are showing flexibility from their traditional positions. We don't want to fight a war," Mukhtar told Dawn News channel in an interview.

He said the issue will be resolved only through the opening up of the borders.

"Today is the time for economic wars and we must prepare ourselves. There are other problems in Pakistan and India - there are food shortages, the oil problem, the electricity problem and these problems can't be solved if we are at war with each other."

Pakistan, he said, was "trying to help India" in the economic field. "We are saying that we would like to buy gas from Iran and that pipeline will go to India, which is a big market. They will benefit and we will also benefit," he said.

Excellent statement by the Defence Minister - it continues to validate the change in policy Musharraf initiated, that of moving beyond "traditional positions", and focusing on economic progress and development.

WAR...heck No...

In this economic, capturing markets, big bucks era....who can afford war ? Even any conventional war for 15 days will push Pakistan and India as well, at least 20 or 30 years back......

Wars have become so damn expensive that even giants like US or UK needs coalition to wage one.....who can afford one at our end?

Fear of war will always be maintained and remain but I don’t think that there is any more room for full fledge conventional war ....And if it ever happened in future...then probably its going to create many big bangs with millions dead on each side.....

This is the era, of "Soft" imperialism, according to some smart pundit ;)

IMO...this is all due to the IPI "Peace" Pipeline.

. . . .
peace is a natural by-product of such business.

Pakistan can't risk fighting with India and not sell fuel transit. India can't risk fighting with Pakistan and not buy fuel transit.

Quite frankly India is right, the deal forces India not to fight with Pakistan. But it does the same the other way round. As long as both sides are not looking to pick a fight, it should be okay for both sides. Only grouches in the crowd are those who want to keep the possibility of war alive.

THAT... is very...cool thinking by both INDIA & PAKISTSAN.... and it was needed long time back. this is good to see people thinking positivly on both sides of the line.
that can bring....stablity.... peace....... better.... quality of life for poors and an reason.... to bring a regional..... defence.. alliance between a number of countries .... like...... IRAN..... PAKISTAN.......INDIA..... BANGLADESH.... etc, which means better employment.... and secure and better quality of life for every 1 in the region.:welcome::cheers::agree::tup:

Batmannow:

Iran as part of SAARC eh?

Thats an interesting option.

Not possible unless Obama gets elected, talks to the Mullahs, and saves the world!!!

If Afghanistan can be a part of SAARC why not include Iran?
Interesting though indeed. This will not only put Iran out of isolation, she'll have to strike a balance between India and Pakistan aswell.

I am glad that both countries are focusing on economic development. But still, weapons galore in South Asia.
