On 5th March 2008, Ansar Burney a respected Human Rights activist in Pakistan and presently the caretaker Minister of Pakistani Government got successful in getting the pardon for Kashmir Singh and also secured his release.
Kashmir Singh was arrested 35 years ago while crossing back to India. According to the now retired personnel of Pakistani Army who was instrumental in the capture of Kashmir Singh 35 years back, he was caught with maps of Islamabad, and lists of Army installations, their details of ammunition under their use and the details of each commander. He speaking to a local newspaper (Daily Express) further said that Kashmir Singh was a double agent, and he also used to spy for Pakistan and he should not have been released.
But since he has been, nothing can be said anymore rather than what words Mr Ansar Burney had to use to hide his embarrassment.
I did not take up this case because of Kashmir Singh. I took it up purely on humanitarian grounds. If he has confessed to being a spy it still does not mean I have done a wrong thing, Burney said
But the twist of faith was most cruel when after Kashmir Singh got the pardon on Tuesday 4th March 2008, family of Khalid Mehmood got a call from India, telling them their son has died in Indian prison on 12th February 2008.
So who was Khalid Mehmood and why did they get the gift showing gratitude on release of Kashmir Singh in this manner?
Khalid Mehmood was a poor bus conductor from village of Batapur, which happens to be on the border between Pakistan and India. Being an avid Cricket fan he wanted to go and watch 2005 Cricket series between Pakistan and India at Mohali. His mother Kariman Bibi stopped him as much as she could, but Khalid being a cricket fanatic couldnt be stopped.
After getting their the events as told by his family include that he lost his passport and on his way to Pakistani Embassy he was picked up by Indian agencies and put in custody on suspicion on being a spy for Pakistan. It was only after an year when his family would come to know what has happened to their son. Khalid Mehmood also wrote letter to his family detailing how he was tortured in the prison, on which his mother, sister and brother paid him a visit in India.
As per Khalid Mehmoods brother Khalid was so frail after torture that he couldnt stand up anymore. He had hot water poured on him and nails stuck in his feet along with other sort of tortures. Family appealed in the court for release of Khalid Mehmood, but Indian agencies scared them off just within 10 days.
Pakistani Authorities have decided to first get an autopsy done on Khalid Mehmood before handing his body over to his family for burial. Whereas Khalids family has said they will like to seek justice by filing a case against Indian Government.
But point is, in last 3 years what did Pakistani Embassy in India did for him and other Pakistanis stuck in jails of India!? We pay taxes off our hard earned money and if we land into trouble in a foreign land, no one will come to aid of us, even if we have a green passport? Its a shame that Pakistani minister rushed to help a double agent Kashmir Singh who has been now patronized in India with a house, 5000 Rs pension, and his handicap son given job in Government. While the grieving family of Khalid Mehmood will just cry for rest of their lives!
Only if Mr Ansar Burney with due respect could get over the political scoring during the end times of his custodial duty of caretaker minister, maybe he could take a look at the list of Pakistani men, women and children kept in the Indian jails.
Only if Pakistani media was not crying to cover the event of Kashmir Singh in such a fashion as if he is going to be the next Prime Minister of Pakistan in place of Makhdoom Ameen Fahim, maybe they could turn their eyes to how many our people have been left to die in the dens of Indian Jails under one case or another! While BBC beats drum for the wives and fathers of Indians suspected to be in Pakistani jails somewhere, our own Pakistani media could at least project our own dilemma internationally!
