Pak govt trying to muzzle media

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani authorities are engaged in a “concerted” attempt to muzzle the media, using violence and financial pressure to blunt criticism of the government, a leading rights group alleged Friday.

President Gen. Pervez Musharraf says he has introduced unprecedented media freedoms since he seized power in a 1999 coup. The United States, his main international backer, cites lively debate in newspapers and on the country's booming private television channels as evidence of Musharraf's democratic credentials.

But Human Rights Watch says those liberties have been eroded, especially since March 9, when Musharraf triggered a hail of criticism from political opponents and media commentators for suspending Pakistan's top judge.

In an open letter to Musharraf, the New York-based group also alleged that security forces were implicated in the death of one journalist and the detention of five more since the start of 2006. Three of those detained were allegedly tortured, it said.

“Human Rights Watch is concerned about concerted and increasing attempts by the Pakistani government to muzzle the media,'' the group's Asia division chief, Brad Adams, said in the letter.

While some media carry critical comment, many reporters receive phone calls from intelligence agents or unidentified persons pressuring them to avoid publishing stories that expose “government or, in particular, military misdeeds,” Adams said.

Government officials were not immediately available for comment on Friday.

The letter criticised a move by Pakistan's media regulator this week against Aaj TV, a private channel covering week-long protests against Musharraf's removal of the Supreme Court chief justice.

While officials say the judge was abusing his office, critics accuse the military president of trying to tame the judiciary ahead of possible legal challenges to his continued rule. Aaj says the regulator is threatening to stop its transmissions after accusing it of “casting aspersions” on the judiciary and bringing the army into disrepute.

A provincial court has suspended the regulator's order temporarily.

The rights group commended Musharraf for personally apologising for a violent police raid on the Islamabad studio of Geo, another TV channel covering the judicial crisis.

But it also cited complaints from Dawn , a leading English-language newspaper, that authorities are threatening to cut government advertising – a vital source of revenue – over its coverage of political tension in Baluchistan province.

Oh wow. The Pakistani media is more free than ever and these morons still have to complain. Government could take an easier route and shut down all those channels who lie to the public. The more leeway these idiots get, the more they complain.

Adu, freedom of press under current government is unprecedented. Read some online papers, they're full of anti Mushy and anti government propaganda. TV can almost broadcast anything....except for the satire 'Burqavaganza', it just got banned under pressure of some mullah's.

Neo,

I am sure, I do view Musharraf as a progessionist. But the important part of the article is March 9, which is the CJ issue and Geo TV incident. Any dictator's greatest enemy is the Media. I wouldnt be suprised if Musharraf did what he is accused after March 9

Adu, the CJ affaire was a set up mastered by the opposition with help from abraod and the raid of TV station was a mistake, Musharraf never authorised it and dealt with the ones responsible.

That is mere speculation from our part, it can be or cannot be true. I was talking from a more Historical sense where Media/Press has always shown independence and always been the greatest enemies of Dictatorship.
I have my reservations on the CJ issue, even if they were ordered from abroad. From Missing people case to very thing else. CJ did uphold the consititution of Pakistan which Musharraf has done.

Neo,
It is very hard to believe that Mushy never knew about it!
There are black out of the channels for couple of days before the raid. Ministers telling the channels to stop programs.

Hence I just cant believe Mush did not know about it.

Sitting outside Pakistan u cannot imagine how it is here. The media is not as free as the government and its ministers especially Mush, Ghalat Biyani and Sheikh rashid claim.

According to the top anchorpersons Ary One World and Aaj Tv were taken off air almost 23 times on the first hearing of CJ for showing pics of Senator Latif Khosa.

TV talkshows are also under strict government control and the panel pf these programmes is decided by Pemra. Which has to include certain government officials in every show.

Recent notices to Aaj Tv and a fine of 25000 to ary one world clearly show how free our media is.

On the other hand the govenrment and ISI propaganda machine JANG Group is busy in downplaying the whole CJ episode

Mushi has been working hard to make a State controled television. The biggest thing that has been pubicly told is that Sheed Masood (hope I spelt it right) that he was forced to have agreements with the governments on what he should say and what he shouldn't. This Dictator is gona go he has to no body likes him.
