Project to play key role in keeping China and Pakistan linked with the world: SCO

ISLAMABAD: The Pak-China fibre optic, a 820-kilometer long fibre optic cable project from Rawalpindi to Khunjerab, has been made active for commercial use.

A spokesperson for the Special Communications Organisations (SCO) said on Friday, the cable would play an important role in keeping China and Pakistan linked with the world. “The completion of the project holds a milestone importance,” he added.

Pak-China fibre optic cable to start functioning by year-end

Expenditure on the initiative amounted to $44 million supported by 85% concessionary loan from the Exim Bank of China. The project is owned by the military-run SCO and its engineering, while the procurement and construction (EPC) contractor is Huawei.

The SCO spokesperson said the Pak-China fibre optic project is the first cross-border contact between the two neighbours. The communication contact will prove to be positive for internet traffic from China to Middle East, Africa and Europe, he added.

Turkey to provide cybersecurity

The completion of the project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) will convert trade corridor into a digital corridor. The foundation stone of Pak-China fibre optic cable project was laid in May, 2018.

Around 18.2 kilometres portion of the cable passes through the federal capital, 466 kilometres in Gilgit-Baltistan, 280 kilometres in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) and 47 kilometers in Punjab. The cable reaches Rawalpindi from Khunjerab via Karimabad, Gilgit, Chilas, Babusar Top, Naran, Mansehra and JaryKas.

Pakistan-Chinese 820-kilometre long fibre optic cable from Rawalpindi to Khunjerab is open for commercial use. The Pakistan-Chinese fibre optic cable project will be a major revenue generator for Pakistan and provide the shortest route for Chinese telecom companies. A spokesperson for the Special Communications Organisations (SCO) said: “The cable would play an important role in keeping China and Pakistan linked with the world. The completion of the project will be a major milestone.” The total expenditure on project amounted to $44 million backed by 85% concessionary loan from the Exim Bank of China. that is why 5g is coming to enable the huge data transfer with high speed from satellites it cannot be said with certainty that this can be done but countries are working on it
There is no comparison of data rate and cost between satellite and optical fiber. :laughcry:

Would you like to explain how?

In order to be for others, It should have jumped over Punjab and terminated in Karachi.
Rawalpindi is the last station where SCO has communication setup. From Rawalpindi it can be linked to anywhere in the world through other optical links across the country and further to marine cables.

20 Gbps of 5 G has no comparison of data rate against a single pair of single mode OFC

5G systems in line with IMT-2020 specifications are expected to provide enhanced device and network-level capabilities, tightly coupled with intended applications. The following eight parameters are key capabilities for IMT-2020 5G:

Peak data rate Maximum achievable data rate 20 Gbit/s
User experienced data rate Achievable data rate across the coverage area 1 Gbit/s
Latency Radio network contribution to packet travel time 1 ms
Area traffic capacity Total traffic across coverage area 1000 (Mbit/s)/m2

internet here is getting better and better each day

data rates are getting cheaper
Great to hear that. Having affordable internet access is a fundamental element for economical development in the coming decades. Internet provides a way of breaking physical barriers and improving efficiency of the economical system. Farmers, small traders and consumers will see major benefits by connecting to the market directly.

Very right , from Khunjrab Top to Rawalpindi this OFC has number of drop and insert sites for communication networks which means this tremendous bandwidth is available to tourists, local businessmen, students and government departments in the surroundings. Just imagine previously there used to be a small VSAT link of FBR at SOST and so was the case with FIA for immigration. These links used to work on schedule timings with very low bandwidth at a very high satellite cost and were still not updating central databases live. Present government is emphasizing upon tourism development in these areas, better internet facilities will enable tourists to share their feelings and uploading of pictures for their loved ones in real time at a great ease, thus will be improve one important element required for a good tourist site and so is the case for all types of business and agriculture.

So basically, now I don't have to suffer a 400+ ping time if I want to play a game on a Chinese Server from say Islamabad? :yes4:

You raised a great point regarding tourism. Nowadays internet is like air and water that tourists would expect in the tourism spot. Unless they are hardcore tramper that like to explode uncharted place and don’t mind live without it for a few days, most common tourists would consider lack of internet with great annoyance and unlikely to stay and enjoy the place in fullness.
