The one potential drawback -- besides the MTCR-limited range -- is that it could get costly to buy these in numbers. It's an import and every import of a SOM will take away from working on making the Ra'ad compatible with the JF-17. One solution (which we spoke about a few years ago with @JamD) was making a ALCM similar to the SOM, i.e. a 'Ra'ad Lite'.

JV initially then totally locally made ER version is the way to go.

Why should we have an imported weapon when we do have our own indigenous system similar to this one. If we need some additional features then we must try to incorporate them in our own system rather than buying an imported one.

The encouraging part is the development of "Ra'ad II", which means there is certainly a program to evolve the Ra'ad. It would be absolutely stupid if one such development isn't the "Ra'ad Lite".

On a related note 2018 was supposed to be the year of new toys but it seems delays and the economy happened.

SOM is ready for 5th gen bird i.e. F-35 while Pakistan will need to develop one for it's 5th gen bird also it has better stealth then ra'ad and different type of seeker too, it can complement current inventory of ALCM.

Our 5th generation bird is still a decade or more away. Raad is also ready to go on any platform be it 3rd, 4th or 5th generation. Stealth comes from shape and RAM coating, later we already have access to and former can be done rather easily and in a short span of time just by primarily observing other similar weapon systems available in the market and then fine tune it with actual testing. That research would also help in the AZM fighter project, enhance the understanding of the subject for our own engineers and add one more advanced capability to in-house manufacturing. The more important area to focus on is the survivability of the weapon.
