A move to send more than one lakh Bangladeshi female workers to Hong Kong starts next month, as it has shown keen interest to hire a large number of workers, said officials at the Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry on Sunday.

Dr Jafar Ahmed Khan, Secretary of Expatriate Welfare Ministry told The New Nation, "Hong Kong authority has shown keen interest to recruit a huge number of Bangladeshi female workers. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) has already been signed in this regard.

A high-powered Bangladeshi delegation visited Hong Kong last month and talked with the Honk Kong authority to recruit workers, said Shamsun Nahar, Director General (DG) of BMET.
"Honk Kong is willing to recruit a large number of Bangladeshi female workers in house keeping sectors and related activities," she said. The female workers would draw US $ 480 per month against 8 hours duty with the facility of medical and insurance. They will also enjoy weekend and overtime.

"We are hopeful that we will be able to send more than one lakh female workers to Hong Kong within a shortest possible time as most of the initial works have been finalized,"Nahar said.

Expected female workers will not need to pay immigration cost instantly. They can pay it from their salary in several installments, she said, adding that every female worker must take a two-month training on English and Chinese language, which would be provided by the BMET.

A Hong Kong delegation will visit here on July 25 to provide a curriculum for training for the female workers and after that circular will be published on different media to recruit female workers, DG, BMET, said.

Some 35 training centers have been set up across the country and each district would be brought under such training facilities soon to train up female and male workers, according to the overseas employment ministry.

Different teams of the ministry are working on exploring manpower market across the world. They would visit Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Japan, Taiwan,Bulgaria, Rumania, Czech Republic, Poland, South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe.

very good.. instead of sending them to ME we should concentrate more in south east.

what will be the long term prospect? Will the women able to start a family and settle down there? or is this a short or fixed time employment?

anyway congrats to bangladeshi women.

I think, it will be a contract employment with a time limit but with a chance of extension if the employy families want. Spouses are certainly not allowed. There are/were many maids from Phillipines and Indonesia in Hongkong. Hongkong housewives seek job carreer and, therefore, need housemaids to do kitchen, washing, house cleaning works and looking after the kids. HK is a sophisticated society, our girls/women may face a cultural shock there.

However, they have to study the HK Chinese culture, learn communication skill in English and they must be aware of their duties and responsibilities as a housekeeper before they leave for HK. I personally appreciate the govt initiative to build schools to train the candidates in BD.
