The Ottoman military band, Mehter, performed in the border province of Hatay for soldiers taking part in Turkey's Operation Olive Branch in Syria's Afrin on Monday.

Mehter, the oldest military band of its kind in the world, performed in Hatay's Reyhanlı district along the Turkish-Syrian border. Hatay Metropolitan Municipality organized the performance as a show of support for Turkish troops.

Some soldiers filmed the performance with their mobile phones, which included a number of anthems such as "Conquest" and "Malazgirt." The soldiers took pictures with the band at the end of the concert.

On Saturday, Turkey launched Operation Olive Branch to remove PKK-linked People's Protection Units (YPG) and Daesh terrorists from Afrin.

According to the Turkish General Staff, the operation aims to establish security and stability along Turkish borders and the region as well as to protect the Syrian people from the oppression and cruelty of terrorists.

The operation was being carried out under the framework of Turkey's rights based on international law, U.N. Security Council's decisions, self-defense rights under the U.N. charter and respect to Syria's territorial integrity, it said.

The military also said, "utmost attention" was being paid to not harm any civilians.

Afrin has been a major hideout for the YPG since July 2012 when the Assad regime in Syria left the city to the terror group without putting up a fight.

Concerts are not my thing but I would definitely pay a large sum of money to watch these guys live.

On an unrelated topic: Are there any Pakistanis/Indians etc who are interested in Medieval re-enactments or am I seriously the only one? I've seen many European style ones, it would be cool to see any South Asian and Central Asian style Medieval re-enactments.

South Asians look upon people interested in history as thick people who couldn't get into engineering or become lawyers or doctors. Unfortunately this is the sad reality.

On topic: Find these mehtar bands really cool. Keeping a proud tradition alive.

Because status and wealth projection is the biggest factor in the minds of most South Asians. There is no regard for the history, geography and traditions of the land.

Just look at the Sikhs for example, they take so much pride in their late Medieval traditions that they still hold events in their community etc through re-enactments.

Ithay paisay aur status de hafus de siwa kuch hor nai.

South Asian re-enactments will be amazing, but complicated due to the diversity and pride and false pride of each regions. Everyone wants to distort history and claim fictional victory.

There should be a South Asian wide organisation that brings together different people for these re-enactments. May even serve as a way to bridge the gap and increase people to people contact. The only way to solve differences is to sit down and learn about each other after bashing each other's head in with a Medieval mace. :D
