Pakistan forces kill 17 militants

(AFP) – 12 hours ago

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — Pakistani forces have killed 17 militants in operations across the northwest, as Peshawar city was once again struck by a bomb blast injuring four people Thursday, officials said.

Pakistan's military launched multiple offensives against Islamist insurgents this year, but the Taliban have retaliated with a fierce wave of attacks killing hundreds of people in the past two months alone.

In the third blast in as many days, a remotely-detonated bomb hit a police checkpoint near a graveyard on the outskirts of northwest capital Peshawar.

"Three policemen and a passer-by were wounded in this remote-controlled bomb blast," Karim Khan, senior police official in Peshawar, told AFP.

On Wednesday two naval policemen were killed when a suicide bomber targeted a navy compound in Islamabad, while a day earlier a provincial lawmaker died in a similar attack in the one-time tourist haven of Swat valley.

Pakistani troops poured into Swat and neighbouring districts in April to drive out Taliban militants who were advancing towards Islamabad, and sporadic clashes continue, despite the military's claims of success in the valley.

Late Wednesday in Seigram village, about 25 kilometres (15 miles) northwest of Swat's main city Mingora, security forces seeking a local insurgent commander stormed a Taliban hideout.

"An exchange of fire took place resulting in the deaths of 10 miscreants and injuries to one soldier," the army-run Swat media centre said in a statement, adding that the militant commander was among those killed.

Two other militants were killed in a shoot-out with security forces in Swat's Matta town on Thursday morning, the centre added.

Swat slipped out of government control in July 2007 after radical cleric Maulana Fazlullah mounted a violent campaign in which his followers beheaded opponents, burnt schools and fought to enforce Islamic sharia law.

Pakistan's military is now engaged in a fierce offensive in the northwest tribal belt along the Afghan border, where the core Taliban leadership and Al-Qaeda-linked militants are holed up in the rugged mountain terrain.

In Bajaur tribal district early Thursday, militants attacked security checkpoints on the outskirts of the main town of Khar.

"It was an organised attack. Troops effectively repulsed it, and five militants were killed in the retaliatory fire," said Fazal Rabbi, deputy commander of the local tribal police force.

Pakistan sent 30,000 troops backed by helicopter gunships and fighter jets into South Waziristan on October 17, and offensives are also underway in the other tribal regions that string the Afghan border.

Security has drastically deteriorated in Pakistan since Islamabad joined the US-led "war on terror" and hundreds of Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked militants fled into the tribal belt after the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan.

More than 2,570 people have been killed in suicide blasts and attacks in Pakistan since July 2007.

According to Swat media centre, security personnel came under fire when they raided a Taliban hideout in Sigram area of Koza Bandai. During an exchange of fire, 10 militants and one soldier were killed.

Detained militant commander Mohammad Naseem alias Abu Faraj was with the troops and he was also killed in the clash. Abu Faraj, a close aide of Maulana Fazlullah, was captured by security forces in September.

The helicopters pounded the hideouts of TTP terrorists in Feroze Khel, Dara Garhi and Mirbak areas where members of the Tariq Afridi group of Taliban are said to be based.

Afridi is the TTP chief of Khyber Agency and Darra Adam Khel. The death toll may rise because, according to sources, the house of local TTP chief, Akhunzada Aslam Farooqui, and an ammunition depot in Feroze Khel area were razed to ground.

Official sources said that almost all suicide attacks in Peshawar had been planned in the Orakzai Agency.

Police in Kohat, meanwhile, arrested 17 suspects, two foreigners among them, in a search operation on Thursday.

Police also seized eight Kalashnikovs, five shotguns, two rifles, six pistols and hundreds of cartridges.

Can anyone explain to me one thing which i have failed to understand...
Whenever someone in a family dies... or is killed there is resentment against the killer in the family and all the members really want to see the killer dead.... i hope i am right so far...

similarly whenever a soldier is martyred his colleagues his friends and his family members feel the same .. and those who are in forces would be feeling more adrenaline in their blood ... right

now if a miscreant is dieing the same would be the case with their families... brothers and friends.. so isnt it that with the death of each miscreant each terrorist we are making their families and friends ... and even tribes men more vulnerable to being brainwashed by the foreign elements and could easily be converted into suicide bombers by easily misguiding them against the army and by manipulating through money ....

so with each such death are we not converting more suicidal bombers...
i would like to see them dead... but will it be the end.. .isnt it what our foreign enemies desire .. that we keep fighting the miscreants.. and keep this battle running...
please i need sincere advice ..

Thirteen Militants Killed in Swat, Lower Dir
PESHAWAR: Pakistani security forces killed 13 militants, including a prominent commander identified as Gul Mulla, in gun battles in two parts of the northwest over the weekend.

Pakistani troops in northwest Swat district killed four militants including a local commander named Gul Mulla on Sunday, the army said.

‘An army convoy was attacked in the outskirts of Mingora. During the retaliatory fire four militants including Gul Mulla were killed,’ said Major Mushtaq Khan, a spokesman for Swat media centre.

Maj. Mushtaq Ahmed said Mulla and four others were killed in the Dangram area of the Swat Valley, where the suspected militants were spotted trying to sneak through the mountains to the main town of Mingora. Pakistan’s army has waged an offensive against the Taliban in Swat for much of this year.

In the neighbouring region of Lower Dir, security forces killed eight alleged militants hiding in a house in the Maidan area, said Major Suleman Hanif, another army spokesman. The soldiers recovered weapons including two rocket launchers and eight assault rifles.—AP

I think TTP might be trying to make a comeback in Swat. Unlike last time however, it won't be happening.

.
they wont have much success there......

Swatis aren't exactly tough fighters, but there is a lot of anti-ttp sentiment for obvious reasons. I dont think they would have a chance to make a comeback.

And besides Army is still very much having their presence there; they havent left.

.
True, won't have any success. But since it says that they were trying to sneak into Mingora, it suggests they may be wanting to make a comeback. I really don't know what's the significance of Swat to them. Why not Peshawar region or the surrounding regions. Maybe because Swat is close to the capital, so from thereon they can push into Buner and then closer to Islamabad? The fact that they are indian-funded will probably mean that is the case, since destabilizing Islamabad will be largely significant.

.
close to capital......and the people do not put up as much resistance, since fighting is not in their nature

very superficial of me to generalize , but that's just how i feel.

Yes they will try to make a comeback. But for the most part, they themselves know they would never succeed. Main area of focus is South Waziristan, Lower Kurram, and other areas as well.

the key here is ground intelligence.....locals know who is belonging there and who doesnt. So they must cooperate with Army by reporting suspicious people or movements.
