Online freelancing grows in Pakistan, earnings reach $1b

If you're all done with the bullsh!t. Perhaps we can talk about the thread topic.

The effects of freelancing, gig economy, is a double edged sword. While traditional societies would have individuals work for 40 years for a single company which would provide living wages, health, retirement, and a Rolex upon reaching it.

While technical advancement have brought about incubators such as Airbnb, Uber, Freelance.com, Amazon Home Services have bought about lists of specialized professionals hire-able upon demand. And some weird ones like Soine Ya Prime in Japan. 40+% of jobs in the US are predicted to be eliminated from business expenses.

Digital platforms have promoted competition and economic growth for the developing world. But technology has outstripped employment protections.

Finally a voice of sanity. However, in Pak's case where the economy is just not growing fast enough to absorb all the new entrants in the job market, freelancing can be used as an area of employment and it can absorb the excess market resources. nowadays, literally every course is available online and one can improve his skill set while staying at home and working. I agree that nothing beats working full time but sometimes circumstances necessitates that we should change our habits or die.

The past is dead. This isn't abu's world it's ours now. Gas isn't 25 cents neither can you buy a house for $5,000.

Depending on your specialty you can easily earn more than your salary. My part-time "consulting" job between my degrees was earning me as much as a full-time former classmate.

My friend bought a 2016 Toyota Corolla November last year and drove lyft (Uber competitor) and will pay off the $16,000 price tag either next month or the one after that. Lyft, a "taxi service", has CEOs from Silicon Valley to PhDs in Washington DC driving cars around in their spare time. Societal norms shouldn't dictate life or expectations.

Uber nor Lyft is going to enable a "living lifestyle". Just like flipping burgers at McDonalds isn't going to support a family of 5 for a high school drop out.

Ask any Careem/Uber driver here and he will also tell you the same thing. I know people who have 4 or 5 cars on Uber or Careem and they are enjoying a much better lifestyle than one would expect. The future is IT and its related field my friend.

Pakistan IT sector is extremely small.. hardly few companies are exists and sustain since 2001. Evey year, thousands of Software engineers graduates but unable to find the jobs. So in such circumstances, the ratio of freelancers will be thrice and further increased each day.

Free lancing is not necessarily wrong. If it can bring in revenues into the country then its good for the overall economy.
