Olive plant imports

For our desi cooking, virgin olive oil is not ideal because of deep frying and it changes the taste. But for light applications olive oil is the best oil out there. It is a taste enhancer and it is light.

It's healthy & that's for sure. But the taste and smell can't be compromised in my meal. And I think not only the smell, but the taste yucks too.

Nope.. There is no smell .. A little different flavour .. For example when you try an egg.. Etc.. But it's healthy unlike those artery clogging oils..

Yeah it is healthy. Maybe you're used to it now and don't find the smell to be nasty. I don't like both the taste and even the smell. I actually don't even like the smell of the oil made with butter. :(

1) I know a LOT more about Transparency International than you do. One of my companies works with them and provides specialized audit services to them, and through them to places like India, Pakistan, Poland, Germany, etc, etc :enjoy:

You are a rich multi national company owner.. I'm just a poor lawyer .. With land owning/military background...

2) Pakistan's ranking has changed and is moving away from the most corrupted Index pretty seriously. Pakistan, India, China are all considered closer to the worst and most corrupted states. But that hasn't stopped India and China's climb economically. Same will be the case for Pakistan :enjoy:. But Pakistan has appointed Transparency International on all Fed and Punjab Government's projects, so that tells you the drive towards no corruption.

That was a ruling minister (health) who said that on national television.

As for Punjab govt or fed government.. Nandipur, metro bus, laptop scams etc etc are for all to see.

3) Putting comments that weren't said in front of me is like asking me to believe ghosts exist. Start linking proofs to your posts so everyone can see its not gossip like what IK does. Everything is wrong with PMLN and YET, they've successfully created a new Pakistan that you and your next generations will cherish!!
Funny ... PMLN has already started whining when Army ordered NAB to start investigation on Panjab and fed govt...

Nawaz sharif is an azzhole .. Everybody knows that... Today even his trader community is cursing him ... Please spare us ...

4) I know exactly where Zhob is.....on your way towards Iran, you can stop by there and get some warm Kehwah and Rosh and Sajji's. I used to come to Nanga Parbat and K-2 for hiking so I know the entire landscape of Pakistan very closely. I don't write shiit where I don't know the history and purpose.

 It borders KPK .. It's near DIK... Iran is faaaaaaaaaar faaaaaar away from Zhob.. And there is no Sajji in Zhob ... It's a Pashtun town... On the other side it borders South Waziristan and to the north (9 hours drive to Afghan border) qamar din karaiz..

5) Olives or Wheat grown at -2 (sub zero) temperature is genetically modified by the evolutionary processes over time (mother nature). If you take these plants out and put them in Punjab's heat, they'll die!!!! Its like one family has a Heart disease gene in their heritage. You can genetically modify the gene through various exercises, protein and diet, but the second you put this person on high cholesterol diet and no workout, after 40, expect a heart attack in the next 5 - 15 years. Just how genetics work, whether animals, humans or plants!!
3)

Depends where you plant the saplings... Your theory about cold European olives is also gonna fail of you plant those dead saplings in Bahawalpur or some other owen city of Punjab.

It is an acquired taste just like anything else. I was just like you but my wife and son were both champions for healthy habits. I had no choice.

Now, I don't complain but even educate all my guests about benefits of olive oil. Since we keep only olive oil in our house we even stopped deep frying our stuff, instead do more light sauteing.

I need olives at breakfast.
Olive muffins ....

I can't eat anything except cereal for breakfast. Eggs are for lunch or dinner. Kalamata olives are my favorite. :smitten:

DESI food is not compatible with Olive (virgin) Oil! u can use them in salad and Omelette!
You can substitute olive oil blends with pomace for Desi cooking. You will get the benefits of olive oil, as well as taste.

pomace olive oil is just fraud ~! it has no benefit which Virgin olive oil brings to table.

Actually the pomace in olive oil brings the smoking point of oils to higher level which suits our desi cooking. If you don't like pomace then go with other blends.

Really? That's even more smelly. I run far away from the smell of olive oil.:happy:
i prefer corn oil over any other cooking oil. thank god there are more people who don't like olive oil i thought i was the only one who don't like the taste and smell of olive oil and was sick of of my relatives and friends telling me to use it as it is more healthy :blah::blah::blah: but what good a healthy food is if you won't eat it but irony is that i love eating olives.

The smell of olive oil ruins the taste of food. Nai?
I regularly take olives with my diet, one has to develop a taste for it but given the health benefits, its superb addition to dietary habits.

Such a shame .. Olive pretty much grows wild in Zhob division,Baluchistan:., yet the govt imported it from Spain ... All for the sake of corruption oops miss management.
Most famous ones are spanish oilves, then Italian ones. Haven't seen Zhobian oilves anywhere.

pomace olive oil is just fraud ~! it has no benefit which Virgin olive oil brings to table.
Yep thats true, I see some shoppers expressing joy over buying cheap olive oil without noticing that they are buying Pomace, not the extra virgin olive oil.

I used to use extensively olive oil for all our cooking needs, but now I just use blends of olive and pomace oil. It is very expensive oil to use on daily basis. But with heightened awareness about benefits of olive oil and more people using them, I am expecting the prices to drop a bit. Right now most of the oil is imported with limited production happening in Rajasthan.

You people should try Rice Barn Oil for frying/cooking.

Its health benefits are even more than that of Olive Oil, and anyway Olive Oil is not suited for cooking.

+Olive Oil available in market is heavily adulterated.

It is true that over time, one gets used to whatever cooking oil you use. However I am a ‘Foodie’ and want food in my house cooked the way I like.

I grew up in a village hence only knew of Ghee or Mustard oil, both produced by ourselves or purchased from the village shop. For the last 20 years we use extra virgin olive oil for salads or putting on top ‘Raw’ as we used to do with Ghee. For deep frying & curries we use de-odorised mustard oil. However when it comes to pillow & biryani, we still use butter ghee available in super markets.

I believe in a balance between quality & quantity of life. I have already reduced my sugar and salt intake and for a long time forced myself to walk about 4 kilometres every day. I am in my 70’s, how much longer can I live even if I completely deny myself the pleasures of rich food? To hell with the arteries.

Coming back to the Olive trees. An oil- trader friend of mine purchased a small holding ( 5 hectares) in Portugal which has an olive grove over about 3 hectares after he retired. He invited me to stay at his farm house for a few days during one summer.

What I could gather is that some varieties start fruiting after 3 years but it is not advisable to use the fruit before the trees are about 7 years old ( ideally about 10 to 12 years). However olive trees are extremely long living and most varieties don’t need irrigation. Hence once planted a couple of generations can enjoy the fruits.

One the average you plant about 500 olive trees per hectare. Average yield from my friend’s grove (all mature trees) is about 2.5 tons per hectare of olives and about 0.5 tons of olive oil per hectare.

Like all fruits, there are many kinds of olive trees and it is not necessary that the kind that occurs wild in Zhob is the best for olive oil production hence I can see the need for importation of olive plants. I had come across a report in Dawn about 3 -4 years back which indicated that GOP has planned to plant olive trees on about 3, 500 acres (about 1,400 hectares over next 3 to 4 years in the initial phase. If successful this could mean about 700 tons of olive oil per year. More than welcome development.

Corruption & mismanagement being endemic in our culture; even if 40% of the 400,000 plants survive to maturity, it is not a bad start.
