Olive plant imports:

ISLAMABAD: Showing its dissatisfaction over an inquiry into the olive project, the National Assembly Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research, on Tuesday, constituted a sub-committee to further probe the massive mismanagement in the import of olive plants from Spain.

These irregularities were committed in the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) project valuing Rs2.5 billion for the development of olive cultivation across the country.

The National Agriculture Research Council (NARC), in November last year, gave tender to a company RSS for the provision of 400,000 imported olive plants. However, upon arrival, the Department of Plant Protection (DPP) granted certificate to those plants despite the fact that majority of them were infected and undersized.

When the issue surfaced, the ministry constituted a six-member inquiry committee.

In the findings, it was noted that there had been mismanagement and lapses in procurement on part of NARC and the Olive Project Management. Mistakes in supply order, poor framework of supply terms and conditions, less-than-efficient inspection procedure, negligence of management and poor coordination led to delays and miscommunication with the supplier.

“The importing company mismanaged imports and supplies and ignored the requirement as per supply orders; especially the size and health of plants,” said the inquiry report. “The onus lies on both sides; the importing company and the project management.”

The report also held the DPP responsible for lack of observation on fungus and mould on quarantine control.

Moreover, it was noticed that the RSS, against the agreed terms and conditions, did not start supplies within the stipulated period of 45 days, besides not ensuring the right health, size and variety of plants.

In response, the RSS blamed poor packaging practices at the original supplier’s end in Tunis.

Recommendations

The inquiry report recommended conducting performance and technical audit of both olive projects through the Ministry of Planning and Reform to ensure improvement of project management and the outcome in future.

However, the standing committee expressed its dissatisfaction over the inquiry and constituted a sub-committee under MNA Rao Muhammad Ajmal Khan to probe and present a report within 30 days to the main committee with fixing responsibility.

Such a shame .. Olive pretty much grows wild in Zhob division,Baluchistan:., yet the govt imported it from Spain ... All for the sake of corruption oops miss management.

Of course you'll link everything to corruption, even after reading the fact that the issue is under investigation. By the way, your post about how "Olives grow in Baluchistan" is like saying, Pakistan imports all critical medicines for pain management like the Valium and Vic, etc, for corruption. While there are PLENTY of open drugs available in KPK. So why not put patients on street drugs than giving them medicine

1: You can't have 4 or 40 million baby plants to grow an entire region from the Olive plants in Baluchistan at once.

2: There are different types of olives with different yet proven health benefits and ease of environment management (being in Pakistani heat vs. European cloudy gloomy days). So ALL these make a HUGE different. I have 5 Olive trees in my backyard, does that mean I can provide 4 or 40 million baby trees to a nation?:angel:. Let the investigation finish, like everything else, it will be in the media (like it already is).

Transparency international lists Pak as one of the most corrupt states .. I live in Pak .. I know how the system works.. You have no idea!

Most of those are produced by local companies and sold at extremely high costs,, just recently a PMLN Leader asked why the poor buy medicines if they can't afford them! So tell me about it!

Perhaps you should ask a Gardner that question!

It snows in Zhob division .. In winter the average temp is like -2 & below... Even in Summers .. One can't sit outside in the evening without wearing warm clothes, jackets or shawls.

Other fruits produced (in the region) and praised for quality are grapes, apples etc... That are sold to other parts of the country.

You've probably never heard of Zhob or the region and you are giving us your expert opinion.. The entire region from Zhob to the Suleiman ranges boasts olive trees..

As for investigation results.. lol..

Cool,i like Islamabad very much, clean city.

Hate it.. It's filled with wannabes..

I used to use extensively olive oil for all our cooking needs, but now I just use blends of olive and pomace oil. It is very expensive oil to use on daily basis. But with heightened awareness about benefits of olive oil and more people using them, I am expecting the prices to drop a bit. Right now most of the oil is imported with limited production happening in Rajasthan.

@Ammara Chaudhry
For our desi cooking, virgin olive oil is not ideal because of deep frying and it changes the taste. But for light applications olive oil is the best oil out there. It is a taste enhancer and it is light.

1) I know a LOT more about Transparency International than you do. One of my companies works with them and provides specialized audit services to them, and through them to places like India, Pakistan, Poland, Germany, etc, etc :enjoy:

2) Pakistan's ranking has changed and is moving away from the most corrupted Index pretty seriously. Pakistan, India, China are all considered closer to the worst and most corrupted states. But that hasn't stopped India and China's climb economically. Same will be the case for Pakistan :enjoy:. But Pakistan has appointed Transparency International on all Fed and Punjab Government's projects, so that tells you the drive towards no corruption.

3) Putting comments that weren't said in front of me is like asking me to believe ghosts exist. Start linking proofs to your posts so everyone can see its not gossip like what IK does. Everything is wrong with PMLN and YET, they've successfully created a new Pakistan that you and your next generations will cherish!!

4) I know exactly where Zhob is.....on your way towards Iran, you can stop by there and get some warm Kehwah and Rosh and Sajji's. I used to come to Nanga Parbat and K-2 for hiking so I know the entire landscape of Pakistan very closely. I don't write shiit where I don't know the history and purpose.

5) Olives or Wheat grown at -2 (sub zero) temperature is genetically modified by the evolutionary processes over time (mother nature). If you take these plants out and put them in Punjab's heat, they'll die!!!! Its like one family has a Heart disease gene in their heritage. You can genetically modify the gene through various exercises, protein and diet, but the second you put this person on high cholesterol diet and no workout, after 40, expect a heart attack in the next 5 - 15 years. Just how genetics work, whether animals, humans or plants!!
3)
