QUETTA, Pakistan (AP) — Around 20 armed men hijacked two buses in Pakistan's southwestern Baluchistan province, killed 19 passengers and battled with security forces on Friday, a Pakistani official said.

Baluchistan Home Minister Sarfaraz Bugti said the gunmen let around 50 passengers go and took at least 25 into the mountains. Security forces surrounded and battled the gunmen, and were able to recover six passengers, one of whom was wounded.

Baluchistan Information Minister Abdur Rahim Ziaratwal said the abductors killed the 19 passengers and left their bodies behind as they escaped deeper into the mountains. He said the assailants still hold some passengers, without giving an exact number, and that the operation to recover them is still underway.

Baluchistan is the scene of a low-intensity insurgency by Baluch nationalists, separatists and other groups demanding more autonomy and a greater share of the province's gas and mineral resources.

Elsewhere in Pakistan, a suicide bomber blew himself up near a stadium in Lahorewhere a cricket match was underway between Pakistan and Zimbabwe, Information Minister Pervez Rashid said on Geo TV.

He said the bomber had tried to get closer to the stadium but was stopped by police. The bomber then detonated his payload, killing a police officer and wounding six others.

Police had initially said the explosion, which was heard during the match, was caused by an electric transformer nearly a mile away from the Gaddafi Stadium.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing, but the Pakistani Taliban, which has been at war with the government for years, has carried out past suicide bombings targeting civilians.

LAHORE: A sub-inspector lost his life and six others were injured as a major suicide blast was thwarted on Ferozepur Road outside Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore during the second ODI match between Pakistan and Zimbabwe.

Courageous policemen stopped the bomber before he could enter the outer wall of the stadium where he blew himself up, killing a sub-inspector.

The Pakistan Broadcasters Association in conjunction with the Ministry of Information had earlier decided to not report the incident in order to responsibly avoid any untoward incident such as a stampede during the match at the stadium.

It had earlier been reported that two policemen were injured in two blasts, which ‘apparently’ happened as power transformers installed near the Gaddafi Stadium exploded, on Friday night.

The 50-over match, however, remained uninterrupted amid the explosions.

A low intensity blast outside Gaddafi Stadium, where a one-day international between Pakistan and Zimbabwe was underway, left at least three policemen injured.

Sources quoted senior police officials as denying any explosive device was involved in the blast.

“It was a pole-mounted power distribution transformer that exploded in the parking lot,” one official told Pakistan Today.

A loud noise halfway through the Pakistan innings, audible to those in the ground and even inside the enclosed press box, has been explained by the police as an electricity transformer explosion. The blast, police have said, took place near the outermost ring of the three-tier security at Ferozpur road, near FIFA house, about 800 metres from the Gaddafi Stadium itself.

The series, the first set of internationals in Pakistan in more than six years, is being conducted under heavy security. More than 4000 policemen have been deployed as part of the security arrangements with two companies of Rangers - Pakistan's paramilitary forces - on standby throughout the series. The Nishtar sports complex, which also houses the Gaddafi stadium, is under surveillance through a system of closed-circuit security cameras and public entry for the games is on foot through extensive security layers.

RIP, this is really sad. It's like we are getting used to hearing about civilians getting killed by the lowlife scums.

This picture shows just a small part of the security of the cricket team. Imagine the security of VVIPs, ministers, prime minister, president etc.

Imagine the security situation in far off areas inside not just Baluchistan but any other province.

The country is suffering since decades.

Imagine the average person on the street who does not get any protection or sense of security. Even senior officials repeatedly say we cannot provide security to each and every person and these high ranking officials have key posts in the country and provinces.

.
According to the report, the security forces surrounded the militants and a gun fight ensued. But how were they allowed to escape? Not one was put down or apprehended!
