Choose country over cash, PCB tells players

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has said that players selected for the series against England and those named for the Pentagular Cup will not be granted Non-Objection Certificates (NOCs) for participation in Bangladesh Premier League T20.

A row has been going on for the past few days as several players want to be part of the lucrative league which has been designed on the format of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

However, the board has stood firm on the matter and now has issued emails to the players stating its policy. ‘The News’ has got a copy of the email. It states that NOCs can be issued to players other than those selected for the Tests against England, those under consideration for One-day Internationals and T20 against England (names given by the Selection Committee) and those selected for the Pentangular Cup to be played from Jan 19 to Feb 22.

This has not gone down well with BPL hopefuls, who feel they have been deprived of their right to earn well through their profession. The players requested PCB to allow them to appear in BPL, promising that they would take part in last two matches of the Pentangular Cup, but their plea has been dismissed.

It has also been learnt that PCB’s Director Domestic Cricket Zakir Khan told hopefuls they can only appear in the T20 league if they write to the board that they no longer want to play for Pakistan and in Pakistan.

This statement came as a shock to those who seek to stage an international comeback or to play international cricket besides featuring in the BPL. PCB has been in constant touch with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) in order for international cricket to return to the country. The board wants BCB to send its team to Pakistan.

A senior board official said the BPL NOC matter was unlikely to affect the relations between the two boards. He said the relations would not be affected by the blocking of players because one of Pakistan’s domestic cricket tournaments is round the corner and the board wants to keep the best players in the country for a healthy contest. This is likely to be understood by the BCB so there is no fuss about it, he said.

“BCB wants to improve its own domestic event and PCB wants to make its event better so it’s not a fight. I think BCB will not mind this thing as PCB is already planning to sacrifice International Cricket Council’s presidency and the sacrifice does not get bigger than that.”

^^ it will be a flop! because busy schedule of international players... we are getting only West indies players! and Business Mughals in BD avoided buying teams. I dont know why!!!

We are getting players from every test playing nations bro(except india). Also we getting players from afghanistan, canada, ireland. It wont be as dazzling as the ipl, but it its something we bangladeshis should be proud of:)

Agreed....And also this is just a 1st season and inspite of BD is not a successful test playing nation, still then BPL was able to attract good amount of investment and good amount of reputed players....So i feel it is a good start. And from a outsider perspective like me, the adv looks pretty good....I have seen the promo video sometime back...It was really good...

Its a good start..I wish BPL is successful...

Afridi top prize in Bangladesh Twenty20 auction

Updated 35 minutes ago

DHAKA: Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi was the hottest property in an auction held for the inaugural Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) Twenty20 tournament on Thursday, but English spinner Monty Panesar and former South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs failed to attract bids.

Afridi was sold to the Dhaka franchise for $700,000 after some intense bidding involving five of the six franchises for the Feb. 10-28 tournament, which is based on the successful Indian Premier League model.

The all-rounder, however, will only be available for the final two days of the opening BPL campaign as he is on national team duty against England in the United Arab Emirates.

Tournament organisers said the money would be given to the players proportionately for the matches they are available.

Quick-scoring West Indian batsman Chris Gayle, who is available from Feb. 14, was another to attract attention with Barisal paying $551,000 for him.

His compatriots Marlon Samuels and Kieron Pollard also created a stir as they were sold for $360,000 and $300,000 to Rajshahi and Dhaka franchises respectively.

A total of 111 overseas players and 80 local cricketers were put on auction with teams given a maximum budget of $2million and able to buy no more than eight overseas players.

Pakistan's Shoaib Malik (Chittagong $150,000) West Indies' Dwayne Bravo (Chittagong $150,000), Australia's Brad Hodge (Barisal $140,000), Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya (Rajshahi $110,000) and Muttiah Muralitharan (Chittagong $100,000) were among others to go for big money.

No Indian players were included in the auction.

Along with Panesar and Gibbs, New Zealand's Scott Styris and Lou Vincent failed to attract a buyer.

Ireland's wicketkeeper-batsman Niall O'Brien was the most expensive player from the associate nations with Khulna paying $80,000 for the batsman.

Bangladesh internationals Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mohammad Ashraful, Shahriar Nafees and Alok Kapali had been selected as icon players for six franchises and were excluded from auction.

All-rounder Nasir Hossain was the most-sought-after Bangladeshi in the auction with Khulna sealing his signature for $200,000.

India-based Game On Sports Management will run the tournament after winning the bid from the Bangladesh Cricket Board for six years for $44.33 million. (Reuters)
