Obama expresses desire to visit Bangladesh

US President Barack Obama on Wednesday expressed his desire to visit Bangladesh during a brief conversation with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in New York.

Obama also praised Hasina for her government’s role in addressing the issue of women empowerment and in countering terrorism after a reception hosted by United Nations secretary general Ban Ki-moon at the visitor's lobby of the UN Headquarters.

Dr Abdul Momen, Bangladesh’s permanent representative to the UN, quoting Hasina said: “While the two leaders were coming out from the reception, our prime minister praised Obama for his speech at the UN General Assembly saying that he made an excellent speech.”

In reply, Obama said, “It was okay but a bit long... you and your government are doing an excellent job in empowering women and in countering terrorism,” Dr Momen told UNB quoting Hasina.

Dr Momen said Hasina reminded Obama about his promise to visit Bangladesh and the US president gladly accepted the invitation again but did not mention when he could undertake the visit.

In September 2009, President Obama assured Hasina of visiting Bangladesh when they had exchanged views while attending a high-level meeting on adverse impacts of climate change in developing countries.

That was the first meeting of new Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with new US President Obama.
