NYT Slams Modi with Editorial: Modi’s Dangerous Silence

.
Nyt can penned down more articles but neither Indians nor Indian pm is oblige to answer them ........ Pm is answerable to us not to Americans or anyone else.......
Fact of the matter is that India is a secular country and it is held at a much higher standard than some of its neighbours. May be India is not answerable to any foreign entity, specially ones whose law is against the minority, but some retrospection is needed.

Does their % of population matches favorably with their % in Indian Armed Forces, Cabinet, Govt, education and parliament even?

What will it take for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to speak out about the mounting violence against India’s religious minorities? Attacks at Christian places of worship have prompted no response from the man elected to represent and to protect all of India’s citizens. Nor has he addressed the mass conversion to Hinduism of Christians and Muslims who have been coerced or promised money. Mr. Modi’s continued silence before such troubling intolerance increasingly gives the impression that he either cannot or does not wish to control the fringe elements of the Hindu nationalist right.

Recently, a number of Christian churches in India have been burned and ransacked. Last December, St. Sebastian’s Church in East Delhi was engulfed in fire. Its pastor reported a strong smell of kerosene after the blaze was put out. On Monday, St. Alphonsa’s Church in New Delhi was vandalized. Ceremonial vessels were taken, yet collection boxes full of cash were untouched. Alarmed by the attacks, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India has urged the government to uphold the secular nature of India and to assure its Christians they are “protected and secure” in their own country.

There is also concern about the mass conversions. Last December, about 200 Muslims were converted to Hinduism in Agra. In January, up to 100 Christians in West Bengal “reconverted” to Hinduism. Hard-line Hindu nationalist groups, like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (V.H.P.) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (R.S.S.), make no secret of their support for a “homecoming” campaign designed to “return” non-Hindus to the fold. More than 80 percent of Indians are Hindu, but Pravin Togadia of the V.H.P. says his organization’s goal is a country that is 100 percent Hindu. The only way to achieve that is to deny religious minorities their faith.

The V.H.P. is reportedly planning a mass conversion of 3,000 Muslims in Ayodhya this month. The destruction of the Babri Mosque there in 1992 by Hindu militants touched off riots between Hindus and Muslims across India that left more than 2,000 people dead. The V.H.P. knows it is playing with fire.

Mr. Modi has promised an ambitious agenda for India’s development. But, as President Obama observed in a speech in New Delhi last month: “India will succeed so long as it is not splintered along the lines of religious faith.” Mr. Modi needs to break his deafening silence on religious intolerance.

Mr.Modi has a lots of thing to do for development. He dont have any time to spend for this BS.

He has a point when he speaks about the percentage of representations...... these one or two names cant represent a large community.........

That's a question usually asked by people with less understanding of the dynamics of partition, not something expected from you. Muslims in the whole of North & even east India had been left rudderless with the migration of almost the entire middle class. How then can any survey show equality when it does not account for the poor economic condition of Muslims, especially that the effect of partition as to create a more insular & backward community sans any leadership other than the religious, worrying about how it will be perceived by the wider community. Those Muslims in the upper & middle classes who stayed back did very well for themselves, it was the poor who suffered. Muslims in S.India who did not suffer the same loss of their middle class show much greater participation at all levels.

So evil Hindus are to blame if Indian muslims don't want to fight, administer or study.

Seems the entitlement complex does not respect borders.

NYT is just jealous of Modi ji. He should put all whiners on Ignore list and stick to Hindu Rashtra objective. :pakistan:

I think it is a lot more complicated than what Horus claims. In India you tend to go for a profession that the people around you are already involved in. Very few people go for something that is not popular in their community. How many Baniyas do you see in army? but a lot of businesses are owned by Baniyas. Same with other communities. Muslims are stereotyped as being more prominent in fields of art, Punjabis in manufacturing, transportation and farming. I know these are stereotypes and a lot of exceptions exists but it is also the ground reality.

Similarly, Indian muslims are great cooks, tailors and mechanics.
