Myanmar asks Manipur tribals to demolish structure in "their land"

The Myanmarese army has asked the tribal village chief of Hollenphai village to demolish houses and churches located at “areas of Myanmar.” This was stated in a joint press statement by Thangkhosai Haokip and Khaimang Chongloi, the president and the general secretary of the Kuki Impi Manipur (KIM), the apex body of the Kuki tribals in Manipur.

The KIM representatives had visited Hollenpahi village to inspect the ongoing construction of the border fence by Myanmar that is reportedly encroaching upon Manipur's land. Representatives of the Kuki students, village chiefs and women activists were also present during the visit.

They said that the boundary pillars 74, 75 and 76 are “missing” near Hollenphai village. Besides, boundary pillar 80 is missing near Gobjang village. But the boundary pillar 23 of Myanmar is very much there.

Lalkholun Haokip, the tribal village chief of Hollenphai, told reporters that the border fence now being constructed under the supervision of Assam Rifles is one km deep inside Manipur's territory.

Myanmarese army’s instruction to demolish houses and churches in this village had been conveyed to the district administration.

However there is no government response. Some churches had been damaged at Gobjang village. It is also said that the Myanmarese army is carrying on with the construction works of the army camp at Hollenphai village.

Some days ago the police and civil officials of Chandel district had rushed there and held brief talks with an army officer of Myanmar there. But since the border fence has left out large chunks of the village the Myanmarese army claims it as the land of that country. It was also contended that as per maps maintained by the British, it is the land of Myanmar.

NGOs and other activists had visited these disputed areas and it was reported that at least 18 villages of Manipur will be affected by the border fence now under construction. The Manipur government had constituted an official committee to look into the border dispute.

However the committee drew flak when Principal secretary (Home) Suresh Babu told reporters that this is not a border fence but a security fence. Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam Gangmei promised to look into the matter. The NGOs have been demanding suspension of the construction works till a final agreement is reached.

Myanmar Army erecting camp in Manipur territory, allege officials

The Manipur government has taken a serious view of the Myanmarese Army preparations to construct a temporary Army camp at Holenphai village, located 3 km from the police station at Moreh — the border town of Manipur. The State government is in contact with the Centre regarding the development, according to official sources.

Attempts to defuse the crisis by dissuading the Myanmarese Army officers from suspending the work till a final settlement is brought about were not fruitful as the officers said that they cannot do anything against the orders from their higher officials.

Meanwhile, several voluntary organisations and political parties in Manipur have been demanding the suspension of the work by Myanmarese Army personnel to erect a border fence as large chunks of the State’s land will be lost. Once the fence is erected, almost half of the 14 tribal villages in Chandel district will go to Myanmar. In the case of Choro in Ukhrul district, the entire village will be on the Myanmarese side of the fence. These political parties and NGOs have been threatening massive agitations to protect Manipur's land.

Earlier, on the basis of complaints from Myanmar, erection of the 10 km-long border fence at Moreh had been suspended; Myanmar had said that its land had been encroached upon. The construction of the Integrated Check Post office was also suspended on similar ground.

The Myanmarese Army had started cutting trees at Holenphai village for the construction of the temporary Army base-camp, following which the village chief informed the district officials about the development. Robert Khetrimayum, Additional Collector of Moreh, accompanied by sub-divisional police officer H. Balram and Moreh police commando unit office-in-charge Sadananda visited the village on Thursday.

The official team found the Myanarmese Army cutting trees in the village. The Additional Collector told the commanding officer of 87 Light infantry of the Myanmarese Army to suspend the work till a settlement is brought about. However, the commanding officer was not happy that the Indian officials had come inside the “territory” of Myanmar. He told the Indian officials that he cannot do anything unless his higher officials gave him orders.

He also told the Indian officials that according to a map of the Britishers, this area is well within Myanmar.

What sensationalist BS headline is this?

As if Mynamar poses any military threat to India. The BSF alone could literally defeat Mynamar's military- they've got LFGs, aviation assets etc.

What if the chinese enter into the fray? They are pretty cozy with myanmar generals.
Much oblidged if you read the question mark in the thread. It means this is a question. No need to go ballistic.Thanks.

Your links don't work, seems like BS news.

Very true but then a rising power tends to disrupt regional stability to an extent- look at China and the SCS issues. How many freinds does China have in the Pacific?

The fact is all of India's neighbours except for China are militarily inferior to India in every way so where's the risk to India?

Also it's now where near as clear cut as some people would like to make out. BD apparently hates India but then the very same people would say BD is RUN by India? Look at the economic dependence nations like Nepal have on India.

Maynammar generals must have wanted some freebees from the india govt so all this drama..

What a stupid comparison.

First of all, India is no rising power! If it was, it would have a certain level of clout and neighbouring countries like Sri Lanka wouldn't have the guts to kill Indian fishermen, Bangladeshi border guards wouldn't have the guts to kill BSF and Pakistan would think not twice but thrice before daring to mess with the so called rising power, etc.

I don't see any of China's neighbouring countries daring to send terrorists into their land, nor do I see any countries killing Chinese fishermen at will. China's neighbours don't have the guts to call China's bluff, all of India's neighbours call India's bluff and get away with it because India is such a sissy nation.

Bottom line is India is not even a regional power, it is a laughing stock, a freaking joke of a country (thanks to corrupt, incompetent, coward leaders/politicians that stupid Indians apparently "elect") , all of India's neighbours literally get away with murder.

Atleast we are not losing islands left right and center to our neighbours :woot:
