Maratha empire was only a regional empire. There was the Mysore kingdom, Hyderabad, Sikh empire. if the British never invaded the Indian subcontinent, than these political entities will likely evolved into independent kingdoms and India would be what it is, a geographical expression, as it is throughout history.
