PressTV - Pakistan offers German company to finish IP pipeline project
Pakistan has started the construction of the final phase of Iran-Pakistan (IP) gas pipeline project by rewarding a tender to a German company to finish the work before 2014, Press TV reports.
According to Pakistans Secretary Petroleum Ejaz Chaudhry, the country has offered USD250 million to the German company, ILF Engineering, to lay the pipeline inside Pakistans territory before 2014.
Pakistan is likely to complete a detailed route survey for laying the gas pipeline from the Iranian border close to the Makran Costal Highway to its off-take point at Nawabshah in the current month, covering a distance of over 781 kilometer.
Energy-hungry Pakistan is willing to increase its fuel imports from various sources, including Iran, to reduce power shortage that has crippled the countrys industry and shaved percentage points off its GDP growth.
In addition to importing oil from Iran, Islamabad has been in talks with Tehran over the construction of a gas pipeline which is to transfer Irans natural gas to Pakistan.
Washington has repeatedly reminded Islamabad of its resentment over the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project.
