No Patriot sales to Turkey in event of S-400 purchase: US official

The U.S. government will end the process of the Patriot sale if Turkey proceeds with the purchase of the Russian S-400 air defense systems, a senior U.S. official has told Hürriyet Daily News.

“We will not proceed as the condition of the congressional authorization to make the offer to Turkey, we’re not in a condition to proceed with the Patriot sale if the S-400sale goes forward, “said the official on condition of anonymity.

“We are very concerned that the Turkish purchase of S-400 missiles will endanger Turkish participation in the F-35 program and will likely result through our legislation in some sort of sanctions coming through the legislations called CAATSA,” the official stated, elaborating on recent talks between Ankara and Washington at which the latter brought forward a proposal for the procurement of the Patriots.

The U.S. has formally made an offer to Turkey for the sale of the multibillion dollar Patriot air defense systems in January in a bid to increase its pressure on the latter’s purchase of the Russian-made S-400systems. But Turkey says it would buy Patriot systems from the U.S. but not on the condition of cancelling the S-400 systems from Russia.

While I am all in for buying better air defence systems and becoming more independent of the US, we should make no mistake. It is becoming increasingly unlikely that we can get away with purchasing the S-400 air defence system.

It is very likely that Turkey’s participation in the F-35 program will fall into jeopardy as a result of this decision.

F-35 Production & Industrial Participation opportunity for Turkey is expected to reach more than $12 billion USD.

That means we will get all of our F-35 nearly for free.

What sweat it? the Patriot is garbage anyways, S400 is way more superior.
S-400 looks good on paper but it never proved itself, so we can't compare them.

It's too late to kick Turkey out of the F-35 program.

But the US can put up roadblocks for new technologies, including for the F-35.

Fact is patriot is nothing as compare to S 400 turkey should show us middle finger

There is some underlining truth to this. While the regular F-35A orders arent that particularly important as there are plentyfull of alternatives to consider, the naval F-35B model has no competitor unless you want to seriously downgrade to the old harriers. With the TCG Anadolu soon to be launched and the second TCG Trakya that is planned, the procurements of these planes are extremely vital. There simply does not exist an equivelant to the F-35B, which is probably why we will eventualy give in to this demand unless the Americans blink first.

It wont matter. Turkey has leant a lot from the program and is going it alone for its fifth gen fighter

Hmm, it looks like the US is shifting the attention to Patriots instead of F35's. So when Turkey inevitably purchases the s-400 systems the US can go on and say they've "punished" this action by denying the sales of patriots and all is well while the F35 program continues.

Looking at it from this perspective, the whole patriot thing coming out of nowhere in the past year, and the comments from the government on how we'd love to have it makes a lot of sense.

I'm ok with this scenario :)

Is S400 coming with some sort of ToT package or something?

Why is Turkey SO adamant on buying that system. So much so that it’s delaying and putting in risk even it’s F-35 industrial participation and knowledge exchange program (let alone prospects of deploying full-fledged F-35 capability in future....)

Turks are nit stupid....they were involved in the f35 design and all f35 engine overhauls will be done in turkey. Billions have bern spent. America is bitching at the orders of its masters in israel. But Greece bought the s300 and there was no issues. This is just a bully tactic. Remember trump barking at Pakistan when he came to power. Now he is begging us to help get hill hillbilly soldiers out of Afghanistan. Turkey and Pakistan simply cannot be ignored
