No automatic visa for Modi as PM, US says - The Times of India

WASHINGTON: Continuing to maintain silence on granting a visa to BJP leader Narendra Modi, US has said the heads of state and government are eligible for A1 visas and no individual automatically qualifies for an American visa.

"Heads of state and heads of government are eligible for A1 visa classification under the INA (Immigration and Nationality Act). No individual automatically qualifies for a US visa," state department spokesperson Jen Psaki told reporters.

"US law exempts foreign government officials, including heads of state and heads of government from certain potential inadmissibility grounds," Psaki said when asked about the possibility of issuing visa to Modi, whose party-led NDA is projected by exit polls to form the next government in India.

Refusing to go into details, Psaki refrained from responding to direct questions on Modi visa issue, except for saying that the US looks forward to working with new Indian government.

"We don't talk about visa applications. We are looking forward to working with the new Indian government when they are elected. But I am not going to speculate on that given, obviously, the results haven't been announced yet," she said.

The results of polls in India are scheduled to be announced on May 16. In 2005, the US government had revoked a visa that Modi had for travelling to the US on the ground of alleged human rights violations after the Gujarat riots.

oops.. but i guess US will have to revisit its decision.. India is an important country for US and when it comes to mutual interests i sure am US will put this human rights violation thing aside.. sad state of affairs..

Let the results come, if the NDA does as expected then its the US that shall need Modi more than the other way round.''

The US ambassador to New delhi has been replaced & retired prematurely , everyone is playing safe.

Why should Modi or India bother ? With China showing two fingers to US, Russia doing what it wants in Crimea & Ukraine who else will the US turn to .Modi , if elected shall see the next US President and its not going to be Obama.

Interesting times ahead.

He will visit US in September for the UN General Assembly session. That will be the first major interactions between him and the World Leaders

Modi already said he will never apply for US visa .. it will be interesting to see what US does.. I guess Obama never thought Modi will one day become Indias pm .. what a dilemma for US. btw it was US ambassador who met modi in Gujarat last year..

All this talk about MODI...but what will he do about LOK PAL??? Will he do anything to curb corruption or simply do what Congress and the BJP has done before which is LOOT!

Let the US officials spend their tax payers money to come to India. Just like how Deng Xiao Ping forced Margaret Thatcher to send her envoys to Beijing . He made them dance to his tunes. All in all he said, to sum up " You come to China, China will not go to you !"

Same thing can be expected of Modi
