NIA team in Bangladesh to probe alleged ‘love jihad’ case involving Zakir Naik

Zakir Naik

New Delhi: A team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has reached Bangladesh to probe an alleged “love jihad” case involving Islamic preacher Zakir Naik and two hardline preachers of Pakistan origin, sources said on Wednesday.

An NIA source related to the probe told IANS, “A team of NIA has reached Bangladesh to collect details in the alleged love jihad case it had registered in August last year.”

Team gone to Bangladesh

The source said that the team has gone to Bangladesh to question an Indian woman and the son of a Bangladeshi politician named Nafees. The NIA had recently questioned the woman through WhatsApp. The woman belongs to the family of a Chennai-based businessman.

The source said the NIA will question the woman on whether she married on her wish or was kidnapped from London, where she was living earlier for higher studies, and then taken to Bangladesh.

The source said the anti-terror probe agency will also question Nafees and his politician father Sardar Shekhawat Hussain.

The NIA has named Islamic preacher Zakir Naik and two hardline preachers of Pakistan origin as accused in an FIR pertaining to the high-profile “love jihad” case.

The case involves the daughter of a Chennai-based businessman and the son of a top Bangladesh politician belonging to former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

The NIA is probing the Indian businessman’s daughter and the Bangladesh politician’s son’s marriage in London.

Zakir Naik

Zakir Naik, who is wanted by the Indian enforcement agencies, and the hardline preachers of Pakistani origin based in the US have been named as accused in the case.

The girl’s father had initially lodged a complaint with the Chennai Central Crime Branch in May last year, alleging that his daughter, who was studying in London, was radicalised and forced to covert to Islam.

He had also alleged that his daughter was abducted from London and taken to Bangladesh by some Bangladeshi nationals.

These pathetic people think someone can be kidnapped from london? Even the. They can question her but have no right to question the husband or the FIL, who do these morons think they’re

How does the NIA people get permission to come to Dhaka and under what protocol?

This needs some serious re-examination if any accord was indeed signed.

Would these idiots allow a Bangladesh investigation team to India? I doubt it.

Moreover - how does a Hindu father in India file a complaint to these NIA idiots and under what condition??

I'm sure this woman is a fully grown adult and has her own choices and wishes. Is she still her Daddy's property??

What kind of a banana republic is India where people of one religion cannot marry people from another??

These Sanghi freaks are taking India back two hundred years.

One thing is really troublesome is that they will investigate the husband and father in law. This is unlikely unless Bangladesh police is present during interrogation. I don’t think they should have been given permission to come here. Bangladesh Police could do the investigation and give their report.

NIA probes union of Chennai-Dhaka couple who studied in London, finds no ‘love jihad’

The agency did not find any evidence that the interfaith marriage was “love jihad”, a term groups use to describe some relationships between Muslim men and Hindu women, but one that the courts and the Union government do not officially recognise.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) recently questioned on WhatsApp an Indian woman from a Chennai business family who converted to Islam to marry the son of a Bangladeshi politician after meeting him in London, where they studied together, to find out if their marital union was a case of what some Hindu groups describe as “love jihad”.

The agency did not find any evidence that the interfaith marriage was “love jihad”, a term groups use to describe some relationships between Muslim men and Hindu women, but one that the courts and the Union government do not officially recognise. The woman said she was happy with her husband and had willingly converted to Islam, people familiar with the development said on condition of anonymity.

Her father, a Chennai-based businessman, complained in May last year that she was abducted in London by the son of a leader of the Bangladesh National Party (BNP) and a former member of Parliament. He alleged that she had been forcibly taken to Bangladesh after she was radicalised and converted to Islam. The woman studied in London with the Bangladesh politician’s son.

Tamil Nadu Police asked the NIA to investigate the matter because it had international ramifications.

After recording her parents’ statement, the central anti-terror agency contacted her on WhatsApp. “During the questioning (over WhatsApp), she told us that she married him willingly after converting to Islam and has not been forced at all in the marriage. She said she is happy,” said an NIA officer who didn’t want to be named.

Officials cited above said their probe in the case was “more or less over” and a closure report will be filed in court after other verifications are completed.

This is not the first time that an NIA probe of a “love jihad” angle has not yielded any evidence of a conspiracy.

An NIA spokesperson said the case is under investigation.

“A complaint of kidnapping was filed last year and we had registered a case,” said Chennai commissioner of police, Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal, unable to recall the sections under which the case was registered. “Since we transferred the case to the NIA, we aren’t aware of further details or the present status of the investigation.”

Another senior official of Tamil Nadu police who did not wish to be named said, “When we get a complaint of such a nature which has international and religious ramifications, we don’t investigate.”

“Our stand is to transfer it to the appropriate agency and in a case like this it is the NIA.” The official, however, could not recall the complaint made last year.

NIA’s probe of interfaith marriages in Kerala, including that of Hadiya’s marriage to Shafin Jehan that became a cause célèbre, revealed that there had been no coercion to marry the brides and convert them to Islam. It examined several cases in Kerala where it was alleged that the woman had been forced to convert to Islam.

The Supreme Court too, in 2018, overruled a Kerala high court order that annulled the marriage of Hadiya to Jehan, saying the right to marry a person of one’s choice was integral to Article 21 (right to life and liberty) of the Constitution.

The Central government has said in Parliament that there was no term such as “love jihad” in the law. Union minister of state for home G Kishan Reddy said in the Lok Sabha in February 2020: “Article 25 of the Constitution provides for the freedom to profess, practice and propagate religion subject to public order, morality and health. Various courts have upheld this view including the Kerala high court. The term ‘love jihad’ is not defined under the extant laws”.

However, two stringent recent laws in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh appear to want to crack down on interfaith relationships that allegedly use marriage as a lure to force Hindu women to convert to Islam. The stringent laws do not use the words “love jihad”, and the UP law has already been challenged in the Supreme Court.

I think rather than "Love Jihad" this was more like "Money Jihad".

Women have beauty and their charm as an asset. They want to offer it only in exchange of financial security and to the most eligible suitor of her liking. In this case the suitor's dad is loaded and is a former MP.

She is smart and decided rightly that this guy was her guy, all considered, Hindu/Muslim issues notwithstanding. I am sure she is leading a very comfortable life, somewhere in Gulshan.

Young educated people (Thank Allah) do not think like their parents with back-dated beliefs.

Probably not religious either since Muslims can’t marry Hindus.
