New Taxes Will Kill Digital TV in Pakistan Before It Becomes Mainstream

I never thought the USA and Canadian telecom and media industries were integrated. Bell Canada was the leading telco operator in Canada. The American Baby bells were always restricted to American soil. All the cable tv companies in USA were restricted to American soil. the only I am not sure are the satellite TV operators. Netflix is the elephant in the room that competes everywhere it can

Well if you want to go further back AT&T was a juggernaut in North America the Original AT&T was broken up as you said in the 1980s here in NY we had NYNEX and Bell Atlantic which were spunn off from AT&T those two merged and became Verizon ahh small world

I did a term paper 12 years ago on this. going by memory ...
AT&T = AT&T + 7 Baby bells
7 baby bells = Ameritech + NYNEX + bell Atlantic + SBC + Pacific Bell + bell south + US West
Verizon = Bell Atlantic + NYNEX + GTE
AT&T = AT&T wireless + SBC + Bell South + Pacific Bell + Ameritech (of course they added DirecTV and Time Warner to the mix)

I live in Canada, which has some of the highest taxes in the world. We literally get taxed for paying taxes. Our internet prices are also one of the highest in the world, and for shit speeds, same with our phone Bill's; just as an example, I pay my home phone, internet and TV for almost 40,000 PKR a MONTH. I also have to pay almost 50,000 in car insurance a month. Now our government is forcing through a carbon tax, which have skyrocketed gas prices to 162.16 PKR PER LITER, and we produce our own gas!

Don't speak as if we're living a life of luxury, just because we're not living in Pakistan.

Besides, I'm not saying I agree with him, but attacking expats, instead of addressing the points isn't a good way to make an argument, you're just being dismissive.
Give the option of immigration to these naysayers and they will sell their kidneys for it unless they are sitting comfortably in the elite classes dodging taxes or deciding which person to attack next for violating their self perceived standards.

The entire nation has bipolar disorder

I had niche interests in defunct companies and telecom and media related stuff looking at how telecom in the US was 40 years ago is shocking AT&T was one of the most powerful corporations in America and perhaps the world in some cases regarding telecom equipment all those old school phones you see sometimes in govt offices were all built by Western Electric which was owned by AT&T however by the 80s anti trust acts kicked them to the gutter

Neither is that of TV and News media.

Luxury is when you buy a Samsung 4K 85 inch.
Not a screen to access media.
Luxury is relative term..Government has right to tax and there representatives can reject it....This government is doing what it considers right and all other institution are fully supporting it

I think we can all agree on one thing that government should have low taxes on DTH because it is something new in market. Increase taxes when its at 40% in Pakistan, increase even more when its at 60-70%. That should be right way. That way government will earn tons of money as well.

.
The article starts off by saying the taxes have been levied on DTH equipment to encourage local production. I see nothing wrong with it. If Pakistanis cannot produce it at home they should be willing to pay higher amount for it. There are no free lunches in the world.

Other forms of revenue exist. From taxes on mega corporations, who're the only ones who pay taxes, to exports, to government owned enterprises.

Taxes aren't the only form of income the government has.

You have online services to pay for. Digital TV will bring them. I want to watch a pakistani cricket match or Premier league matches in HD.

I think you meant Rs. 500 but yeah that is a good solution.

My point is right. You expats don't have to face repercussions like we do so it is easy for you guys to say INCREASE TAXES, CARS ARE A LUXURY, INTERNET IS A LUXURY, BUILD YOUR OWN CAR
The Reason i suggested RS 50 is Because Majority of money hording happens with bigger notes and it also devalues your currency
with smaller notes its harder to carry.

Rs. 500 is much more practical. Rs. 50 is not at all, not even 100.

Not to mention the health insurance which we pay almost 40,000 PKR/month and still when you visit dentist, physician for routine checkup, pay 2000pkr/visit, and the toll which we pay everyday about 1900pkr/day. Still few hundred thousand of us bring into Pakistan more than what 220 million together bring.

I'm sorry, but Pakistan's problems lies in Pakistani awaam itself.

You realize that they give a lot in return, BECAUSE they get paid taxes, right?

If everyone stopped paying taxes, no more universal health care.

Your order of events is mixed up.

If you're too ignorant to understand the basic principles here, then there is no point in arguing.

Canada is rich because everyone pays their fair share. Pakistan has the potential to be even richer than Canada, but if no one pays their share, then it will remain a poverty ridden country.
