got that right. i'd rate leadership as:

Mao > Hu > Deng (price shocks, increase in US GDP/capita:Chinese GDP/capita ratio in the 80's, corrupt sales of state owned industries, capital flight, he's overrated) > Hu Yaobang/Zhao Zhiyang > Jiang Jieshi > Horse sh*t >>> Jiang Zemin

Give credit where credit is due. Deng is above Hu. Was responsible for continuing policy whereas Deng struck out a new course. The problems you mentioned had to be overcome eventually, Deng just choose to take them on.

Also I'd rate Hu Yaobang and Zhao Zhiyang a lot lower, just because those two for all their good intentions were completely naive about the causes they championed.

Also I thought Zhu Rongji was the saving grace of the Jiang Zemin term.
