Over 1,600 space applications revolutionised life, says ISRO chief - The Economic Times
By PTI | 30 May, 2015, 11.09PM IST

NEW DELHI: More than 1,600 technologies, including the mega-pixel cameras and MRI machines, which were developed for space application, has revolutionised lives of common man, ISRO chief A S Kiran Kumar said today.

He said many new innovations are coming up for new missions of GAGAN, Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (INRSS), re-usebale launch vehicles, Astrosat, Aditya and inter-planetary missions.

"Sometimes, a key innovation does not come from a new technology, but from an application of an existing technology in ways that offer cost and performance benefits unforseen (earlier).

"The megapixel cameras using which you take selfies was originally designed of space photography. The MRI that acts as guide to life-saving (medical process) was made for moon observation for Apollo Mission. Welcrow used in bags, shoes and purses were popularised to bind equipment in zero gravity solutions. In fact, over 1,600 technologies ended up revolutiionsing our lives," he said.

Kumar, who is also the secretary of the Department of Space, was speaking at a convocation ceremony of a private university.

He said, in order to compete, it was necessary to innovate rapidly and cost effectively. Availability of any new technology in a way leads to be new benefits.

He said ISRO has been able to tap every opportunity available to realise this vision and has succesfully adopted its innovative concepts and technologies since early days of its inception.

"It could make use of, as early adaptors of new technology, could use technolgy for remote sensing imaging, three in one concept of INSAT series facilitating meteorology, communication and broadcasting application and bringing on obe platform, the moon and mars borbyer mission," Kumar said.

Manned mission: It is for govt and country to decide, says ISRO Chief - The Hindu

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman A. S. Kiran Kumar on Thursday said it was for the Government and the country to decide when to undertake manned space mission.

Answering questions from students after delivering a talk at the Ramakrishna Math here, he said that the country has to make up its mind on human space programme. On its part, the ISRO was working on developing certain critical technologies for the proposed mission. “We need to wait for the nation to decide when we want to put a man in space”, he added.

Replying to another query, he described how the ISRO scientists faced anxious times during the Mars orbiter mission as it was the first time that they were sending an object beyond the sphere of influence of earth. One of the crucial challenges of the mission was the re-ignition of the propulsion system after a gap of nine months.

Although the space scientists were quietly confident of the success of the mission, there were also lot of apprehensions. The only way to get answers and address the apprehensions was by conducting on-ground simulations, which were conducted for a month. He said “the success demonstrated that we were able to overcome all problems”, he added.

Asked what motivated him during such missions, Dr. Kiran Kumar said that the ISRO had dedicated itself to bringing new technologies for the benefit of the society. “We are contributing to the welfare of the society. That is the biggest motivator for all of us”.

On hacking of an ISRO site by Chinese, he said it was defacing and not hacking. However, there was no loss of information as that site was not being used at that time.

Earlier in his address, he emphasised the importance of sustainable development and environment-friendly technologies while pointing out that innovation and technology had become the hallmarks of modern society.

Just remembered. @jamahir What happened to your clockless microprocessor man.
My data mining project is almost done.

will soon start writing a emulator ( intel platform ) to emulate the computer and processor environment.

The guy didn't even go to university. Stop taunting the अनपढ़

and who are you in the world exactly??

michael faraday didn't attend college, so obviously you should stop using every electrical machine, including the computer you used to send this nonsense post.

You're not michael faraday, you're a 30yo brahmacharya अनपढ़ who will do nothing with his life. Of course you're drawn to socialism and communism, it's the refuge of the unaccomplished.

Why still the emulator? Send me the model code. I can do some testing ;-) I am already writing some drivers to an ASIC thats coming out next year.

This is not revolution, this is destruction of bird life and plants life.

Radiation from mobile towers(wireless) has already eliminated birds from cities. White-men is good at anti-environment inventions. This can be avoided by choosing Cable internet. India should focus on taking cable internet to villages. Dump this wireless crap. In my village, we never experienced any disease breakout in decades. But in cities, every year there is some disease roaming in air. It stinks like hell. Is this advancement? This is bullshit.

Nowadays, telecom ministry has issued a public circular misleading people - "Allow telecom companies to setup Mobile Towers on your houses. Don't worry, they don't harm your health". What a big lie !!

In my house, we don't have any wireless stuff. No mobiles. Only landline connections(phone/internet both). Life is fun without mobiles. No recharge tension. Now, my pocket is free. I keep something else in it. While my friends look so worried about tracking their mobiles, i laugh at their worried faces. They say why u always look so cool, i said - because i am not looking in my pocket 24x7 if i have lost my mobile, i can focus on life instead. and they shiver with embarrassment. lol ;)

You from Green Peace ??? just Asking .

To this clown @jamahir who is ranting about SpaceX in this thread, I have one simple simple question:

What the fück is SpaceX doing which NASA could not do?

He rants a lot about Elon Musk being an visionary, inventor and what not while Indian tech companies (he seem to hate them a lot) being coolies. I mean what the fück! That man is a businessman with a large enough war chest to take losses in twilight years of founding a company. The only advantage he has over NASA is less bureaucracy and lack of meddling congress.

Whatever he is doing could have been done by NASA. His company survives on government contracts ,uses testing facilities of NASA , is partially funded by US government, which I think is due to US govt promoting mercantile interests in space. Space is next mining frontier and having established private companies would give a leg up to USA when technology become feasible to mine some materials (I expect first one to be Tritium), as private companies are better at exploiting resources as proven throughout course of history.

Even his idea of private space company is not novel. This idea has existed for nearly fifty years now. The only reason that a space company become feasible today is due to the cultural degradation on US ,in which people are more interested in honey boo boo floricks then in space technology, which has resulted in deep budgetary cuts for NASA (as elected officials always pander to lowest common denominator). SpaceX is equivalent to me starting a space company, enticing some scientists and engineers of ISRO to join me for better salaries and benefits and then design a spacecraft based on RLV of ISRO and a rocket based on PSLV of ISRO, if I have as much money as Elon Musk.

Why still the emulator?

because buying a fpga board would cost 1.25 lakhs or more. :)

Send me the model code. I can do some testing ;-)

okay, it should take me six to eight months to have a stable emulated environment... at the moment i don't know what interfaces i can build into it for testing from outside but your statement has given me that idea.

I am already writing some drivers to an ASIC thats coming out next year.

what application area is this??

OMG ....it's like very other thread is an example of Jamahir "making friends and influencing people " -got to say this for the guy, he's got the thickness of hide of a hippo.
