Not sure whether this should be on the news, let alone on PDF. Officially, Iran makes its own missiles. So it is officially supposed to have already passed the stage of gun making. The name also of this gun will be confused with the name of the missile because they are both the same (Zolfaqar).

Since when does a cultural group like MASAF designs guns? @Full Moon this should answer you question why it is news.

Seems like designing guns is considered such a basic thing in Iran that even a cultural center designs one!

عصر امروز در حاشیه گردهمایی بسیجیان دانشگاه علوم و تحقیقات که با عنوان «آتش به اختیار» در محل مجتمع فرهنگی دانشجویی 13 آبان (لانه جاسوسی سابق آمریکا) برگزار شد از یک سلاح انفرادی جدید به نام ذوالفقار رونمایی به عمل آمد.

این سلاح با وزن 3.5 کیلوگرم برای کالیبر 7.62 طراحی شده و یکی از اهداف آن جایگزینی این سلاح به جای ژ3 است.

این سلاح که توسط گروه فرهنگی مصاف طراحی شده با الگوبرداری از سه سلاح انفرادی خارجی از جمله G36، ACR و FN SCAR ساخته شده است.

استفاده از قنداق تاشو برای انجام عملیات‌های ویژه، خشاب پلیمری با قابلیت اتصال خشاب‌ها به یکدیگر، استفاده از بدنه ماژولار و نیز امکان استفاده از ریل بر روی بدنه به منظور نصب لوازم جانبی از جمله مشخصات سلاح ذوالفقار است که می‌توان در این سلاح از تیرهای ساب سونیک در آن استفاده کرد.

بنابراین گزارش، تمام متریال و مواد اولیه جهت ساخت و توسعه این سلاح در داخل کشور وجود داشته و هزینه تمام شده برای ساخت آن نیز به نسبت پایین است.

برد عملیاتی این سلاح نیز بدون اپتیک تا 400 و با اپتیک تا 800 متر است. این سلاح از سوی گروه سازنده به صنایع دفاع ارائه شده و در آینده تست گرم این سلاح نیز با همکاری صنایع دفاع انجام خواهد گرفت.

I really hope they didn't copy a recoil action in 2017... it would be the only modern rifle with a recoil action...

But it looks too much like the G3 with this outdates action system...

The 5.56mm long barrel MASAF rifle with short stroke system would be much better. I hope its not a army idea to stick with the 7.62 NATO round...

Well, we need to replace G3 and Artesh should change to 5.56mm rounds. As @PeeD said, 5.56mm MASAF rifle is way better choice than using this one.

7.62 NATO is good for special operation forces. The recoil and weapon weight for a conscript soldier especially in full auto are inferior to a long barrel MASAF like AR-15 design (not a short M4).

5.56 MASAF designers were smart enough to go for a ~510mm barrel variant to give conscripts a longer reach.

Every few months a new rifle is unveiled, is Iran ever going to actually standardize its ground forces or continue to watch as their special forces in the Artesh use Kalashnikovs.
