New horizon in Dhaka-Delhi ties: Azad

SHANTINIKETAN, Kolkata, Sept 12 (BSS)- Information and Cultural Affairs Minister Abul Kalam Azad said here today that the new horizon opened up in the friendly relations between the two neighbours through the joint celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of great Poet Rabindranath Tagore should be taken further ahead.
The Minister said this while speaking as the chief guest at a function organised at Jorasanko Thakur Bari in Kolkata in handing over as a gift of Bangladesh a replica of 'Padma Boat' used by Tagore.
In his speech, Industries and Commerce Minister of West Bengal Partha Chaterjee, who attended the function as the special guest, laid emphasis on carrying forward the friendly ties and cultural bondage between the two countries.
Vice-chancellor of Rabindravarati University Prof Sabyasachi Basuroychowdhury, former vice-chancellor Prof Karunasindhu Das,Dhaka University Professor Emeritus Dr Anisuzzaman and Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Kolkata Abida Islam also addressed the function.
Azad hoped that the matter relating to presentation of the replica of the 'Padma Boat' would not remain exclusively confined to formalities, rather it would help the people of India to know the history of Bangladesh, Shilaidaha, the River Padma and the Padma Boat and through this the cultural bondage between the two neighbours would further be cemented.
At the function, the Minister handed over formally the replica of the 'Padma Boat' to the Rabindravarati University authorities.
Later, a brief cultural show was held. Celebrated exponent of Rabindra Sangeet of Bangladesh Papya Sarwar rendered Tagore songs
while renowned Poet Architect Rabiul Hussain recited self-composed poems at the function.
In the evening, the Minister handed over replicas of the 'Padma and Chapala' boats to Viswavarati University authorities at Shantiniketan.
Earlier on Tuesday, Azad met Indian Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ambika Soni and Minister for Cultural Affairs Kumari Selja in New Delhi.
