Like i said China too has social issues that has to be addressed, Indians here would also use couple to dozens of cases found in China to be representative for the whole country. That is true - at least India has a society which highlights such cases and villagers themselves rescue the girl child. In China's case, for all we know - the villagers get together and aid the killing of the girl child. Who hears of news coming from inner China?

It is commendable that when a society noticed a wrong was being committed, they immediately rectified it and rescued the child.

Female infanticide was a state policy fully endorsed and encouraged by Indian government during Indra Gandhi's rule (1966-1977, 1980-1984) and then during her son Rajiv Gandhi's rule (1984-1989) as a means to control exploding Indian population. During those 22 years millions of unborn/ newly born females were aborted/killed all over India and not a single person ever raised a voice, and you are pretending here as this is some rare incident. My guess is that a girl had some 'relations' and unintentionally became pregnant; rather than own up and 'shame' her family she decided to bury the baby instead.

Backwards social attitudes, combined with possible mental illness led to this.

Or may be the parents are very poor and cannot feed the new born hence in desperation they left the new born alive. This is sick. I dont understand why they need to have a baby in the first place and then leave it to die.
If this is because the baby is a girl child then both the parents should be hanged to death immediately as they have no respect for other human life.

I believe Indian laws are too lenient on these matters. We have "let -go" attitude which is causing us great harm not domestically but internationally as well. The hundreds of years old practice will take couple of generations to fix. I really wonder how these started in the first place and when?
