After a hiatus of five years, India and Nepal have revived their defence ties and will shortly initiate various projects involving procurement of defence and military equipment.

The visiting Chief of the Nepal Army, General Chhattraman Singh Gurung, has made inquiries regarding supply of tanks as well as artillery guns, INSAS rifles, ammunition, troop carriers, bullet-proof jackets and sighting equipment from India.

Defence Ministry officials revealed that Nepal has requested for 100 tanks in two phases at concessional rates. Nepal also enquired about Ajeya (T-72) tanks of Russian origin.

During the recent three-day joint-secretary level meeting in Nepal, India has agreed in principle to resume non-lethal military supplies to Nepal. Nepal and India also agreed to share intelligence and to cooperate on constructing an airbase for the Nepalese army in the western part of the country. India also agreed to provide training to Nepalese security personnel to upgrade their capabilities and to share intelligence for improving security.

Although India and Nepal have been traditional allies and virtually all of the training and supplies of the Royal Nepal Army were sourced from India, both countries stalled defence cooperation in 2005 after King Gyanenedra took over and Nepal became a republic. India was skeptical about military cooperation due to the fear of Maoist in the Nepal Army.

At this juncture, India is being optimistic and trustworthy about Nepal and has even honored Chief of Nepal Army General Chhattraman Singh Gurung with the title of “Honorary Chief of Army Staff” in India. General Gurung visited various dignitaries and participated in high-level meetings during his Indian visit.

We have cornered your beloved country at international forums, we have blown the cover of your country using terrorism as state policy and more over we have made your government to accept that anti-India terrorists do operate from the soil of Pakistan. So there i just posted the obvious facts for the ignorant people who like burying their heads in sand.

Maintaining good relation ship with Nepal,Srilanka and Bangladesh will help counter China's pearl of string ambition and also counter the increasing influence of China and Pakistan in these countires

No BD please. They have hosted our terrorists for very long and still not clear about their position. They have also harrashed and still abuse people of indian origin. Somehow I feel they are never thankful to even 1 good thing india must have done for them.

Instead I will bang on good relationships with Bhutan, burma, maldives, nepal, sri lanka.

Mate under the rule of Khaleda Zia Bangladesh was harboring terrorist organizations like Huji and Ulfa but under the current rule they are taking appropriate steps..Relationships between countries are improving and also we cannot blame them fully for tampering the relationship..some actions done from our side also caused some problems...and also don't think that some members in this forum from their country represent the whole Bangladeshis..There are lot of people out there who wanted good relations with India..

I Think to Sri Lanka China will be the Important Country.

China’s Financial Aid to Sri Lanka Increased to US$ 1 Billion.

China’s Military Aid to Sri Lanka Increased to US$ 500 Million.

China Invested US$ 6.2 Billion in Sri Lanka between 2007 & 2009.

China AND Sri Lanka good Friends

Sri Lanka also had a strong Friendship with Pakistan, I hope in the future Sri Lanka India Relations will Improve.

Srilankan! Thought that the recent LTTE crackdown would not have happened had it not been for Indian help. correct me if I am wrong

Indian help? That is what prolonged this whole affair. Indian meddling and covert moral and material support (sound familiar?) caused excessive problems for SL's leadership even though due to diplomatic niceties these were rarely voiced in public.

What turned the tide was a window of opportunity that the SL government and Armed Forces capitalized on. The did the right kind of preparations aided by friends and took the combat to its logical conclusion. Indians essentially were caught flat-footed by the quick SL successes on the battlefield and were scurrying to come up with an official position on the quickly changing situation on the ground. Even the official statements coming out of the FO in ND were essentially devoid of any meaningful policy substance.

SL is an independent country which has kept excellent relations with all countries including Pakistan and China. Indian insecurities and big-brotherly attitude should be put in check by the Indians themselves if they want to have a decent bilateral relationship with SL.

Sorry Buddy, but you seriously need to Google around as you will find the evidence to be completely opposite to what you just said.

Just one hint, Pakistan transferred 100,000+ mortars from its War Reserve to Sri Lanka to help it out, similarly other ammo and equipment from our War Reserves were shifted to them.

PAF officials helped SLAF in precision attack training, plus any other things in which GoP and PRC helped Sri Lanka get military superiority over LTTE.

Actually no, had India been helping LTTE, Sri Lanka would not have been able to take the war to any conclusion, let alone a logical one.

India had been acting against the LTTE for a LONG time now. LTTE was supported and sustained a long time back. After Rajiv Gandhi's death, things changed completely.

Do know that there was tacit Indian support to wiping out the LTTE. India for reasons of domestic sensitivities cannot supply offensive weapons to Sri Lanka or even be seen directly aiding them in their war against LTTE. This initself can raise a huge domestic political storm.

Infact it was the Indian Navy which was stopping LTTE from smuggling arms to Sri Lanka AND directly providing support to SLN in finding out and destroying LTTE warehouse ships. LTTE parked these ships in waters, they were stocked with weapons and ammunition to be used in their war.

India was not caught flat footed, India had been assisting Sri Lanka for a long time coming for this war. In your eagerness to show that it was Pakistan who supplied weapons to SLA to fight, you assume that India was not tacitly supporting this.

You keep harking back to the past when India did support LTTE and assume that this has been the case till now. If India was indeed supporting LTTE, you can feel assured, that this war would not have ended.

Infact, Prabhakaran and his associates had been issuing statements for long trying to apologize for assassinating Rajiv Gandhi in order to win back New Delhi's support.

To give you an example, when there was a possibility of a coup in Sri Lanka, India was the only country informed of it by the Sri Lankan authorities. Whether you like it or not, Sri Lanka will remain very close with India and again, the ground reality is that what India says does matter quite a lot in Sri Lanka, more than what you would like to believe or admit.

.
Not sure why people have so much myths about SL war. LTTE support was old story know well to all.

India likely to supply 50 phased out Ajeya T-72 tanks to Nepal IDRW.ORG

India, which has decided to resume military aid to Nepal, is likely to supply 50 phased-out tanks at discounted rates.India´s The Telegraph newspaper reported the deal, quoting an unnamed senior Defense Ministry official in New Delhi on Tuesday.
The report said Nepal has specifically asked whether it can acquire 50 tanks from the Indian Army at discounted rates. These are Ajeya T-72 tanks that are being replaced with the Bhishma T-90 in the armored regiments.
Besides the tanks, officer cadets from Nepal will get more seats in the Indian Military Academy and the recruitment of Nepalese Gorkhas in the Indian Army would be increased. The decisions followed talks, Nepal’s visiting army chief, General Chhatraman Singh Gurung, held with Indian security officials in the Indian capital.
On recruitment of more Nepali nationals to the Indian Army, the southern neighbor has proposed to raise an additional battalion that will increase the recruitment from Nepal from the current level of about 1,600 soldiers a year. There are seven Gorkha Rifles regiments in the Indian Army, each with five or six battalions of about 900 soldiers. Gorkhas from Nepal and India are recruited not only in these battalions but also in other regiments such as the special forces (parachute battalions), the newspaper said.
Nepal Army has also enquired whether India can raise the supply of military hardware to the level prevalent nine years back. In 2005, India scaled down its military aid, following the February 1 coup by the then king Gyanendra. But the actual reduction in military assistance had begun in 2001, with the Maoist insurgency intensifying in Nepal.
General Gurung, an alumnus of the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehra Dun who attended the passing-out parade of officer cadets on Saturday, also held talks with the Indian Army’s director-general of military training. He said it was his wish to set up an institution like the IMA in Nepal.
At the academy, Gurung visited the room where he had stayed as a cadet. He also spent time in its archives searching for a photograph of himself with the late Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, whom he described as his hero.
Gurung was honored with the rank of General in the Indian Army by the President on Monday. He is slated to meet the external affairs minister, the foreign secretary and national security adviser on Wednesday.Gurung’s visit comes close on the heels of an India-Nepal defence cooperation committee meeting in Kathmandu last week.
The Indian Army, the paper said, looks at the demand of the Maoists for “integration” of their PLA troops in the Nepal Army ranks — under the country’s peace accord — with “suspicion”.The delegations of the two armies have exchanged notes on security, with the Nepalese team of the view that the Maoists can present a military challenge yet again.

Prabhakaran has for a very long period has had a price on his head...and that to in Indian rupees...the covert support he got was from NRI tamils...and not from the govt. of India...if you believe otherwise..your opinion differs from that of the Lankan govt....and nobody can help you there...
What turned the tide was a window of opportunity that the SL government and Armed Forces capitalized on. as was the case with Israel bombing the Gaza strip...for Pakistan and China..it is easy aiding the Lankans....now you view things in one dimension...had the Lankans accepted the Tamil plantation workers as their own and repatriated them...none of this would have ever happened...their alienating the Tamils...complicated our position...we took the righteous stand as you did...in our own mutually contrasting perceptions...
SL is an independent country which has kept excellent relations with all countries including Pakistan and China. Indian insecurities and big-brotherly attitude should be put in check by the Indians themselves if they want to have a decent bilateral relationship with SL.
nobody can stop SL from having good relations with any country..but the idea of us waking upto Chinese/Pakistani bases in Lanka would be unacceptable.
Any deals bypassing those with common sense would be looked upon with suspicion...heard of the Chinese policy of "string of pearls"?
we don't want that happening...not with the amount of pending disputes and issues we have with our northern neighbor...give and take.
