Nepal, China begin first-ever joint military exercises
PTI | Apr 16, 2017, 04.03 PM IST
KATHMANDU: China and Nepal began their first-ever joint military exercises on Sunday, a move likely to rattle India as Beijing boosts its influence in the region.

Impoverished Nepal is sandwiched between China and India and has in recent years ping-ponged between the sphere of influence of Delhi and Beijing as the Asian giants jostle for regional supremacy.

The 10-day drill in Kathmandu, dubbed "Sagarmatha Friendship 2017" referring to the Nepali name for Mount Everest, will focus on counter-terrorism, according to Nepal's army.

"This is in line with our efforts to hold joint exercises with countries that have diplomatic relations with Nepal," military spokesman Jhankar Bahadur Kadayat told AFP.

The drills will likely be watched closely by India.

Landlocked Nepal remains dependent on India for the majority of its imports, but the previous administration aggressively courted China as part of a nationalist drive to decrease the country's reliance on New Delhi.

"Nepal and China share a multi-faceted tie and a joint military exercise broadens that relationship," said Tanka Karki, former Nepali ambassador to China.

Last month China's defence minister Chang Wanquan visited Nepal- the first by a Chinese defence minister in 15 years- to discuss the joint military exercise.

The current Maoist-led government in Nepal has sought to repair strained ties with Delhi while continuing to accept cash from its powerful northern neighbour.

China has lavished grand infrastructure promises on Nepal, including recently pledging $8.3 billion in investment- equivalent to nearly 40 percent of its entire GDP.The commitment dwarfed India's investment offer of $317 million.

This exercise shows how weak and poor Chinese influence in Nepal actually is, as the exercise will be a mere section level exercise which means only 15-20 Chinese troops will participate.:lol:
Sources in the Nepal Army said the drill will be held at the section level and last 10 days.
On the contrary in Nepal-Indian military exercise held this month itself not only saw participation of 700+ troops from India but the duration of the exercise was longer too.

This is a two week long battalion level joint exercise between the Indian and Nepalese armies

If Nepal allow .China to develop it like how China develop Tibet. In 15 years, its GDP per capita would easily surpass Indian major cities. As of now, Tibet, which is one of China's poorest provinces, has higher GDP per capita vs the wealthiest Indian city such as Bombay or Channai. Sad.

China and Nepal began their first-ever joint military exercises on Sunday, a move likely to rattle India as Beijing boosts its influence in the region.

Impoverished Nepal is sandwiched between China and India and has in recent years ping-ponged between the sphere of influence of Delhi and Beijing [1] as the Asian giants jostle for regional supremacy.

The 10-day drill in Kathmandu, dubbed “Sagarmatha Friendship 2017” referring to the Nepali name for Mount Everest, will focus on counter-terrorism, according to Nepal’s army.

The drills will likely be watched closely by India, which is often accused of playing “big brother” to its tiny neighbour.

India has yet more reason to worry about China’s military clout: for the first time ever, China has conducted joint exercises with neighboring Nepal. South China Morning Post:

Nepal seems to be doing here what small countries always do: balancing among powerful competing neighbors to receive favorable treatment from both. But Beijing’s growing coziness with Kathmandu is likely to be seen in less innocent terms by India, which resents China’s increasing intrusions into its neighborhood.

China’s exercises with Nepal comes just on the heels of its dramatic military parade with Pakistani troops, an even more worrisome prospect for New Delhi. And Sino-Indian tensions have also lately been brewing in the disputed region of Arunachal Pradesh, an India-administered territory along its northeastern border with China, where both sides have made extensive infrastructure commitments to defend their turf. And this all comes on top of China’s ongoing push to establish a “string of pearls” of strategic ports in the Indian Ocean, which has long alarmed New Delhi.

India may officially declare that it is unperturbed by the exercises with Nepal and China’s growing footprint in its backyard. Despite the denials, though, the two sides’ growing geopolitical competition is being laid bare for all to see.

I remember of some Indians shown some training exercise with Nepal and bragging about their historical relation:rofl:, it's this our time to brag as well :cheesy:

China should now help Nepal to build a strong Airforce with a good air defense system. Given Nepal's geographical location, a strong Nepalese Airforce is a necessity.

have u seen the landscape of Nepal ?

. . .
They have got 36 airfields already which is not bad for a small country. The basic infrastructure is already there.

India might try to absorb Nepal like Sikkim. These airfields will be needed to check Indian aggression.

When some crappy exercise happens Chinese go haywire. As if Nepal is going to join mother China.
It has little to know value. You lot are hopeless.
How about India conducting exercise with PLA.
They have got 48 airports already which is not bad for a small country. The basic infrastructure is already there.

Yeah, but you can't level the mountains surrounding the country. It's a nightmare. We all saw what happened during earthquake.

You don't need to level all the mountains. Airbases could be developed in the flatter terrains with aircrafts capable of covering all the territories.

If you have not noticed, this is the first ever exercise we did with Nepal...and there is more to come, build a strong military relation with Nepal is only good for Nepalese and they will know who to look for when facing India's bully.:azn:
And why we're hopeless with the fun just begun , it's sound like India's desperation trying to counter China's move in BD, Sri Lanka and now Nepal.
