So here is the issue. My friend has PC with vista on it. he has no OS cd. He now wants to install XP on it. I have written vista serial key before i format it.

So since i will be installing XP on it, I would like to install Vista on another PC using the key i wrote.

How do i install vista without a CD, but with valid serial key??

any way i can install trial and than at the end of trial, i will just put that key and it should work.

Thanks!!!

An OEM PC will have the geniune sticker with CD key on it. You can install trial and activate using the same key.

If its a dell pc they have built in recovery partition. You can burn a recovery disk using the dell supplied utility which will create a DVD for OS and drivers preloaded.

You can use a utility to extract the key out of current factory installation and reuse it.

This will probably not work. I believe the same key is used only for a few (maybe even only one) copies of the OS. So the trial that you use probably will have a different key than for the copy your friend has.

If your friend has activated Vista with that key, it is use less to you. If he had PC of certain OEM, different from yours, than again key won't work for you.
You can use certain cracks available out there, though that would be piracy.

Vista sucks man, go for windows 7 if not then xp is a better choice.

I do have window 7.

but the problem is that his PC doesn't support other than vista OS. when i searched drivers on the website, the website has only drivers for vista OS. No drivers for xp or win 7, so i don't wanna install other OS and end up having to drivers for that OS. :)

I do not know where you are getting this from, but then again read what you wrote.

How can Microsoft/OEM not have drivers for Xp or 7 but have it for Vista?

You can search for drivers on other websites. Not only on OEM webpage.

Which OEM is this? That might be useful to know.

For your thread question, you cannot install Vista on another computer if you didn't have the cd.

How ever you can try one thing. Ask a friend of yours (Not the same friend, i mean anyone with a vista cd) who does have the same Vista like Home premium, Professional, 32bit/64bit etc etc. Then use his cd to install Vista. When prompted for CD key, enter the one that you took off your friend's pc.

Good Luck!

u can download windows 7 or vista and its patch (which will convert your trial version to the original version), load it on a formatted dvd through image mounting software and install in another system, i am running the free original windows 7

most of the pakistanis are using same type of windows system.
install trail then download patch and it works.

Install Ubuntu OS on that computer, PC brand and year of production?
personally I won't go for it but he might like it. You can download and Install ubuntu from usb.

Ah Dell exactly the model name/number..

desiguy pm I'll give you link perhaps you might get drivers. Believe me I've fixed some 10 years old computers of my neighbor. The hardest was to find sound.
Also check this website www.ebayclassifieds.com
if your state/city is mentioned people sell original windows for cheap.
