Nearly 1,000 ‘surplus’ PIA employees laid off!

Reduce 50% employees and hired contract workers with better pay but without any benefit. Contract employees can’t join work union because they are only contractor.

PIA must do employees re-evaluations to track the employees performance. Whistle blower act can applied to all departments and in every government institution. Anyone who provides any information about ghost employees or any wrong doing will be rewarded (5,000 10,000 or 50,000 depend on the case).
To eliminate ghost employees in every department, PIA must use biometric login with CC Camera to make sure the finger print match the person.

Start with PIA and then move to other government own businesses and institutions.
When my dad was dg of health finger prints were installed and they were tempered by clerk level employees to avoid digital attendance tracking. We need surveillance attendance system. PIA balance manpower. Agree with you.

RAWALPINDI: The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) management has laid off nearly 1,000 surplus employees and has taken other measures to reduce operational cost of the airline.

This was informed by PIA president and Chief Executive Air Marshal Arshad Malik during a meeting with Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh on Friday.

The PIA chief executive, according to a press release issued by the finance ministry, briefed Dr Sheikh on various activities and initiatives undertaken by the PIA to reduce its operational cost and increase revenues through better management and effective utilisation of available financial and human resources.

Dr Sheikh asked the PIA to pursue independent, sustainable business plan and said the government wanted the national flag carrier to effectively utilise its assets, improve revenue streams and ensure efficiency and financial discipline.

The adviser stressed the importance of a viable and independent corporate plan to help the PIA overcome its difficulties and achieve sustainability in its business processes and flight operations. He said the government was fully behind the PIA management and expected it to work diligently to turn the national flag carrier into an economically stable, viable and dependable airline for local and international travellers.

Arshad Malik thanked Dr Sheikh for his guidance and support and said the PIA management had been able to lay off nearly 1,000 “redundant staff” to save costs.

He termed the ongoing Haj operation a success with almost 90 per cent efficiency achieved in the pre-Haj flight operation and they expected similar results in the post-Haj operation for which all-out efforts were made to bring back the pilgrims as per schedule.

The PM’s adviser directed his team in the finance ministry to work closely with the PIA management and extend them all possible financial help, keeping in view the availability of fiscal space.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Imran Khan had chaired a meeting of the Aviation Division in Islamabad to discuss PIA’s business plan, requirements and other issues. It was attended by Minister for Aviation Ghulam Sarwar Khan, Dr Hafeez Sheikh, Aviation Secretary Shahrukh Nusrat and Arshad Malik.

The prime minister directed the PIA chief executive to improve the performance of the airline and increase travel facilities. Mr Khan directed the finance ministry to cooperate with the PIA in the purchase of new aircraft.

Two narrow-bodied aircraft are expected to be included in the PIA fleet by the end of this year.

HD camera for surveillance with separate backup power/UPS. This should be implemented in every government owned business including yearly evaluation/performance review.

KARACHI: Revenues of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) increased 30% in first six months of 2019, the Aviation Division said in its report.

“From January to June of the current calendar year, the national flag carrier achieved a breakthrough,” the Aviation Division remarked.

During the first year of the current government, the Aviation Division devised a business model to drag PIA out of the depths of accumulated losses worth Rs450 billion, according to the report.
The improvement in revenues came from the introduction of new profitable routes including Sialkot-Sharjah, Islamabad-Doha, Lahore-Muscat, Sialkot-Paris, Sialkot-Barcelona, Multan-Sharjah, Peshawar-Sharjah and Peshawar-Al-Ain, said the report.

The current government also initiated cost-reduction measures to narrow down losses of PIA. The airline played its part by bringing two grounded aircraft into service, which were expected to add more than Rs6 billion to its revenues annually.

The Aviation Division also framed the National Aviation Policy 2019 under which it issued tourism promotion and regional integration (TPRI) licences to steer tourism and regional connectivity, the report highlighted.

The division rehabilitated the runway, taxiway and apron at Saidu Sharif, Chitral, Rawalakot and Muzaffarabad (AJK) airports for tourism licences.

It also initiated the separation of regulatory and service provider functions of the Civil Aviation Authority to steer efficiency in aviation activities.

The authority has claimed to have created 3,200 job opportunities within or under the Aviation Division in line with the vision of Prime Minister Imran Khan of creating employment for the youth.

During 2019, PM Imran inaugurated the newly constructed Gwadar International Airport on March 29. The department also began upgrading the airfield lighting system at Gwadar and Quetta airports while undertaking a clean and green drive at all major airports of the country.

After a decade-long hiatus, British Airways resumed its flights to Pakistan during the period under review and currently operates on the Islamabad-London route only.

“The current government upgraded the Faisalabad airport,” added the report. “It also installed primary and secondary radars at Karachi and Lahore airports and Lakpass station.”

During the first year of the PTI government, the Airport Security Force (ASF) curbed laundering of different foreign currencies equivalent to Rs263 million and foiled attempts to smuggle 53.4 kg of gold worth Rs343 million, stated the report.

Authorities also seized narcotics including 285 kg of drugs of various kinds and 14 litres of liquid ice heroin besides seizing 385 weapons of all types and other ammunition numbering 14,027.

The ASF established joint search counters for the facilitation of passengers.

“Timely weather reporting is essential for the aviation sector. Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) manufactured 34 automatic weather stations indigenously at a cheap cost of $5,000 against the international market value of $22,000-25,000,” said the report.

The PMD also upgraded and installed weather radars in Lahore and Sukkur in collaboration with Japan and upgraded 42 observatories in Punjab and Sindh for sharing data swiftly.

It installed new weather radar at PMD headquarters, Islamabad to be able to make improved short-range forecasting for 3-10 days.

Then patwari asks Imran Khan ne aek saal mein kya kiya.... Woh sub kuch kiya jo apkay abu 30 saal mein nahi karsakay

IK performance has been spectacular, my only criticism of him has been on his neglect towards Karachi and how PPP is given free hand to do as they please.

PIA already have bio-matrick attendance system the one you posted . they came morning for fingerprint and then evening for again fingerprint

I want to fly PIA again and feel proud of a quality airline. Why would expats fly with other airlines when their own airline would offer quality service?

Kick all of the nasty foulmouthed and corrupt stooges from this airline. Revamp from top to bottom. There is a lot of scope for PIA as there are a lot of expats who would fly with their own airliner.

PTI needs to take control with an iron fist. Let Bilawal destroy Sindh if he wishes to, but Karachi must not become a PPP dustbin.

Punjab University removed majority of contractual employees who had served it well through the years, and there was no hue and cry in the media.

Mass lay offs are not a positive development in any field or context. These initiatives are always under the pretext of cost-cutting and improving systems but nothing of the sort happens in the manner it is originally claimed.
I agree with you but not in this case .
You just have to compare your airline with the best of the best airlines. Ethihad or other . They have half the crew of what Pakistani Aircraft that flew has and they flew better planes are thousand times more busy then us.
9 pilot hired for a single flight . There are 25 engineer to a single plane This I can tell from my experience as my uncle was one where as sometimes it exceeds 32 . While ethid has only 5 . And thousands more staff without degrees just hired because they would vote the party.
You have to see pia is a small airlines. It is not what it's used to be. And ofcourse it would hire when it become profit making and start new routes and buy new planes .
But how can it survive being over staffed ?
