ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has urged Afghan President Hamid Karzai to help stop militants escape a major military offensive.
Sharif asked his Kabul counterpart to seal their porous border along a mountainous tribal area where the Pak army has deployed troops and tanks in a long-awaited crackdown on insurgents.

Fresh air strikes early Tuesday targeted three Taliban militant strongholds in Mir Ali town in North Waziristan and killed 13 alleged militants, three security sources said, raising the total insurgent death toll to 190.

Foreign Office spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam said Sharif had requested Karzai to help stop the flow of people.

"Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif called Hamid Karzai last night to request him for the closure of Afghan border to avoid exit of militants during the military offensive," she told AFP.

"The message was earlier conveyed via military sources and Afghan authorities were also requested for an action against militants' sanctuaries in Afghanistan which are being used for attacks.

"I am not aware about the response of Karzai to these requests," she added.

Thousands of people have already fled across the border into the Gorbaz district of Afghanistan's Khost province, according to provincial government spokesman Mobarez Mohammad Zadran, and are being provided with food and aid.

Pakistan's army has so far lost (martyred) eight soldiers.

Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif tells Karzai to stop fleeing militants

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has asked Afghan President Hamid Karzai to plug the entry of militants fleeing into his country following a massive army operation against Taliban, officials said today.

A spokesman of the Prime Minister Office confirmed the telephonic contact between Sharif and Karzai for cooperation against the militants.

The call was made yesterday after reports emerged that more than 2,000 people have entered Afghanistan through the porous border since army launched operation against the Taliban in their stronghold of North Wziristan on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Air force jets today bombed hideouts of the militants in Datta Khel area, killing at least 15 militants, said a security official.

Already about 184 militants and eight soldiers have been killed in the operation named 'Zarb-e-Azb', which means "Strike of the Prophet's Sword".

Another official said army wants to complete the operation before the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which will start later this month.

Army chief General Raheel Sharif has postponed a visit to Sri Lanka. He was scheduled to go to Colombo today for a four-day trip but he postponed it due to operation in North Waziristan, a military spokesman said. Pakistan and Sri Lanka enjoy close defence cooperation.

The Pakistan army launched the operation in retaliation to the deadly terror attacks on the country's biggest airport in Karachi last week that killed nearly 40 people, including 10 Uzbek militants.

There are reports that people are escaping the conflict area and heading towards Bannu city in the northwest where camps have been established for them.

Prime Minister Sharif has appointed federal minister Qadri Baloch as the main focal person to deal with the issue of people displaced due to fighting.

Unfortunately, he's placing the cart before the horse....first go after the "good Taliban", before asking Afghanistan to help you with the "bad Taliban". Where's the incentive?

They know perfectly well that the Taliban do not stand a chance confronting the ANA on the battlefield, hence the reason why they've continued to engage in hit and run tactics, with civilians their overwhelming casualties. We want the Taliban to cease hostilities and begin negotiations with the view to a peaceful settlement. However, they should understand clearly that what they stand for ideologically, not only runs contrary to the Communists we all had stood against during the 1980's, but also against the very social fabric of a once proudly Nationalist and self-liberalizing Afghanistan.
