PUNE: The first lot of chaff rocket 'Kavach', a naval decoy system meant for countering missiles and other incoming guided threats to the Indian naval ships, and the high explosive version of anti-submarine rocket system were formally handed over to the navy by the Ammunition Factory Khadki (AFK) here on Thursday.
Modern armed forces use chaffto distract radar-guided missiles from their targets. Most warships have chaff dispensing systems for self-defence. The AFK has developed three versions of naval decoy system 'Kavach' with ranges of 12 km (long range); 5 km (medium range) and 1 km (short range) chaff rockets.
Usually, these rockets are firedto act as decoys against incoming guided threats to naval ships. All the three versions are launched in different situations based on incoming threats.
The 'Kavach' decoy system releases chaff made of silver coated glass fibre which formsa clutter that remains suspended so that the incoming guided threat confuses the chaff as the actual target and, therefore, gets locked onto the chaff instead of the actual target.
Receiving the anti-submarine rockets and 'Kavach' systems on behalf of the Indian Navy, Rear Admiral Brijesh Jhang, director general of naval armament inspectorate, New Delhi, spoke about the growing synergy between the navy and the Ordnance FactoryBoard (OFB) in developing products indigenously and thereby reducing dependence on foreign suppliers.
"Operating in a surface and underwater threat environment, it is imperative that our ships have the necessary hard and soft kill systems to effectively neutralize the enemy attack. Towards this the anti-submarine and chaff rockets provide the ships with credible hard and soft kill capabilities," Jhang said.
He said, "The Indian Navy had anti-submarine rockets imported from the erstwhile Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). The disintegration of the USSR, led to drying up of the supply pipeline thereby affecting our inventory level while our shipscontinued to have the launchers."
"Therefore, to meet our armament requirement, the OFB and the Indian navy took up the challenge to indigenize these anti-submarine and chaff rocket systems and achieve self-reliance in this field," said Jhang.
Senior general manager of AFKB N Singh said, "These strategically important products would enhance the defence preparedness of the Indian navy. This has been possible owing to the special focus laid down at the AFK on research and development."
