Dehradun: In a significant move, the Indian Navy, after sensing the apathy of the honorary-rank holder celebrities towards armed forces, has decided to not to confer anyone with these prestigious ranks henceforth.
Navy has concluded that the celebrities previously conferred with such ranks have remained apathetic towards the armed forces. Chief of Navy staff, Admiral DK Joshi said that the Indian Navy is now not in favour of conferring prestigious titles to the civilians.
Recently, following the footstep of cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, Indian cricket team captain MS Dhoni, who also holds the honorary rank of Lt-Colonel in the Territorial Army, had chosen to give a miss to the Army’s annual parade ceremony.

Last year, Dhoni was conferred with the honorary rank of Lt-Colonel in the Territorial Army amid much fanfare.
Tendulkar was inducted into the Air Force as an Honorary Group Captain in September 2010.
The absence of Dhoni and Tendulkar from their respective organisational events had sparked off a debate on whether the celebrities should be conferred such titles or not.
The Ministry of Defence had started conferring such titles to the celebrities in a bid to attract the youths for opting defence as their career. But the non-participation and non-commitment of these celebrities towards their duties have caused disappointment which has culminated into the fresh decision of Indian Navy to stop honouring any celebrity with these titles.

Thats a very professional move as such.
Honorary ranks are deserved not by cricket celebs who shine in the limelight..
The IA and IAF acted like Pepsi and Coke trying to sponsor these people.

Now an example of a real celeb that also made a contribution could be Clark Gable.. the star of "Gone with the wind" was also a USAAF Captain and trained gunner who took part in B-17 bomber missions over the Ruhr in Germany.

Another more distinguished one was Brig Gen James Stewart.

Unless you have that sort of input, its nothing more than pointless flashes for these undeserving people.
But then again. Obama also has a nobel for god knows what reason.

True but th elogic behind the IA and IAF's moves were to promote the forces amongst the youths, but now the policy is being re-looked at for stated reasons so it is probboly unliklely we will see either force bestowing such honours to any celebrity or civlian in the future unless it is excepotional circumstances like you have said.

These honorary ranks and doctorates in military and politics are an insult to those who slog for those ranks or doctorates day and night. IMO these are a pathetic methods of showing how easily some people of not that category get these positions, doctorates or ranks just because they are public-famous celebrities or some bloody politicians.

It is a very wrong tradition that we have adopted and if not our entire national establishment, at least the three arms of the military must stop conferring honorary ranks.

Did you read the article? The IN has outlawed it and it seems the IA and IN are looking to go that way too.
