An unmanned aerial vehicle operated by the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) has crashed in eastern Afghanistan, near the Pakistani border.

The drone crashed on Thursday in the remote Paktika province near the border with Pakistan's troubled South Waziristan, the ISAF confirmed in a press release.

The US-led alliance however did not announce the exact location of the incident.

It also ruled out that Taliban militants shot down the drone, saying the incident occurred due to a mechanical failure.

The incident did not result in casualties or damaged property as the aircraft crashed on open ground.

A recovery force was immediately sent to retrieve the drone.

it's impossible to hack these drones linkages with there satelites. Everything is not linked with WWW. You need to have access to there hardware inorder to bug there system. This is out of www hackers league.

probably got a spanking on top of his monitor.

Drone crashing is not something new. Mechanical failures often occur in them.

The real benefit of this robotic technology is that human lives are not lost in case of problems. Drones can be rebuilt but lost humans lives cannot be retrieved.

lolz i hope the dron pilot was injured ......... pakistan decided to attack by in core commander meeting ...every single preparation is done ............... todayz news..

One of America's most sophisticated weapons in the conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, the unmanned drone, has been successfully penetrated by insurgents using software available on the internet for $26 (£16).

Insurgents in Iraq intercepted live video feeds from the drones being relayed back to a US controller and revealing potential targets. A US official said the flaw was identified and fixed in the past 12 months.

Everything can be hacked.

If Iraqi insurgents can hack live video link with drones with software worth $26, think about what a state can do to those drones if they hire a group of the best hackers around and give them all the resources.

Furthermore dones can also be jammed. Jamming the control and navigation signals should be an effective way of disabling the drones.

The operators are not dumb either. They would be more alert now, since they have already dealt with a hacking attacks. Who knows that what counter-measures the operators have in store now. Everything is not so easy as it seems.

However, no one is stopping the enemies from trying either.

There was some news where it was claimed Taliban have shot it down

Taliban often claim things that they did not achieved.

However, it won't be a far fetched idea to assume that a few Drones might have been shot down using stinger type weapons. But that is off-course, if the Drones did not got the enemies first.

Usually, Americans destroy the wreakage of their weaponry so that it does not falls in to the hands of the enemies. So true reasons cannot be easily ascertained.

i cant say about this one. it was a news so i shared. But there had been incidents where they have shot down helis though not accepted by invader forces

Intelligence gathering may sometimes involve creating an intentional and controlled yet plausible breach so that the transfer of information can be tracked to give a better idea of characters involved.

This can be a useful tool under certain circumstances. ;)
