In the next six-seven years, the ambitious National Civil Aircraft Development (NCAD) programme hopes to ready its first platform—a 100-seat civil passenger jet for Indian service and exports. A team from HAL and NAL recently made a presentation to the Planning Commission. It has been decided that HAL will be the lead integrator on the programme, along with the National Aeronautics Laboratory (NAL). A modalities of a consortium or joint venture are to be formalised shortly. According to HAL Chairman R.K. Tyagi, the NCAD programme envisages an investment of Rs.7,500 crore—Rs 4,500 crore in design and Rs. 3,000 crore for prototype production.

On February 20, addressing young designers at HAL, former President Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam said,”There are opportunities and challenges such as developing 100-seat passenger jet which could be taken up by youngsters like you.” A host of private sector companies are expected to be part of the programme. According to NAL, ”The design and development of National Civil Aircraft will be carried out by a core team at NAL in configuration design, systems engineering, definition of subsystems, integration/flight testing and programme management. NAL will also be responsible for undertaking the detailed engineering design for the new aircraft. NAL is in the process of organising the teams to establish a design bureau which will address various engineering issues related to aircraft configuration, sub system definition, test and qualification programmes. The manpower for this will be formed from experts and engineers drawn from NAL, HAL, ADA, DRDO and ISRO. There is a plan to absorb experienced people from outside as well as bright young engineers providing an opportunity to work with cutting edge technologies associated with aviation.”

Was expecting this

.
So the timeline of the completion of the project is 2020.

we couldn't able to complete the NAL SARAS program any time soon and talking about 100 seater plane.

man we need to be realistic

Because it was our first project and we started from nowhere.I think we can pull this project in time.

. .
It is our first project?
you know what i mean?
I dont know what you are trying to say.

Do you know that we had to change the engine in the Saras project which resulted in the change of design and caused a lot of delay??
We faced sanctions by USA and then there were funding issues, lack of human resource, infrastructure.
A prototype crashed in which some scientists died which resulted in stalling of project for some years.
All these factors resulted in a lot of delays.

But in this particular project there is no problem of funds or infrastructure and NAL,HAL,DRDO,ISRO all will work together as stated by the article so i think we can pull this project up in time.

i mean to say we haven't completed this project yet and only god knows when it will be!
for more than 1 year, they are saying we r going to fly the new prototype.

and for that regional airliner i would be happy if they able to get it off the ground by 2020 let alone completion

It will fly this year,It is undergoing ground trials right now before being cleared up for flight

Foolish project management, again with one agency being the designing authority while another agency is the integrator..the ADA-HAL saga has not taught the powers that be any lessons.

Important thing is commitment. There were delays with Tejas. But it flies, and flies well. It is now evident that final numbers of Tejas would be more than 200.
If Govt and participating agencies will work with determination, they will pull this of

One factor that I see is about market. Govt was sure about Tejas numbers. But it would be mostly private airlines which would need such plane. Not sure how many they would be willing to order.

IMHO, more important is development of turbofan engine.

@nik22
I am not pessimistic about our home grown products and technologies but rather realistic.
I know these technologies takes time to mature and we had to start from scratch.
We will have to have patience and invest in these strategic technologies as we did in case of ISRO, Civil nuclear sector and other related areas.
But when someone say that we will develop a regional airliner within 6 years, I don't buy it

.
LMAO this Nal-Hal partnership is good at making chutiyas out of India. Why not NAL as the lead designer and TATA-Mahindra as the lead integrator and manufacturer.

I mean seriously, if people think that NAL-HAL can design and certify this plane and produce enough for exports and domestic market by 2020, then you need to see a doctor or live in a mental anylum.

We all know what has happened to the so called Nal saras, which was also meant for exports.

.
Sounds interesting but seriously do we have the technology to have it built here, especially when we are struggling with NAL Saras?

We seriously need to have a separate commercial wing for HAL or NAL whomsoever is chosen to market this product, or simply have a Private Player like Mahindra and TATA do the job.

ISRO has always been a step ahead of other Govt. Agencies. Its time to learn from them.
