I know there are many dialects in India....is Hindi the one that would be considered "national"? (as in national broadcast would be in it)

yes,u can call hindi a de-facto national language..not officially though..

bhai there was a time when an Oriya family used to live in our neighborhood,they were the ones who taught me the basics of Oriya language but alas i have forgotten the majority of that
